Works great for me
on October 13, 2010
I've used various shades of Clairol Professional's Beautiful Collection (semi-permanent coloring) for a number of years. The product is gentle and predictable. If you don't like the color, you're not stuck with it for too long. It's very good for covering small to moderate amounts of gray hair; the gray hair looks as though one's hair has been nicely highlighted. If you have a lot of gray, however, see my note in the last paragraph of this review.
I believe unhappy reviewers had unrealistic expectations about what this product can do. Here's what it cannot do: (1) Because there's no peroxide involved, it's not going to lighten your hair one bit, whatever your natural hair color is. And if you're looking for a drastic color change (lighter or darker), this isn't the right product for that goal. (2) If you have considerable gray, it won't work as well or easily, since gray hair is more resistant to the dye. But, as noted in my last paragraph here, it still works for me despite having a lot more gray hair than I used to.
If you have much gray hair, you could try the Beautiful Collection's colors labeled "Advanced Gray Solution" (AGS) and offered in a silver-colored bottle. The AGS shade range is limited to only 5 colors, however, compared to the 20+ shades available in this line. While I found that the AGS covers larger amounts of gray more easily and longer, I couldn't find an acceptable shade similar to the one I loved so much in this line.
After experimenting with AGS shades as well as other brands of semi-permanent hair color, I ended up coming back to this product. To help get better gray coverage, I have to use it more frequently than I used to, and with longer heat processing. I still get compliments on the nice highlights and natural-looking appearance that this product yields.
