When I purchased my iPad 2 at the Apple Store, I was disappointed by the lack of options for covers and cases. The Apple smart cover is, in my opinion, not so smart. It certainly won't offer any protection for the iPad. Which, let's face it, will eventually scratch or be damaged from the inevitable accidental drop if not properly encased. I love the design of Apple products and their aesthetics are unmatched. But ultimately (and "purists" might disagree) they have to be covered for most practical every day use.

So after looking at several local stores, including Best Buy, I resorted to Amazon.com for my iPad 2 case. The first one I purchased, a Cygnett brown leather case, was spectacular. But I found that with how I intended to use the iPad 2 (blogging, writing emails, etc) that the onscreen keyboard just wasn't sufficient. So I made a trip back to the Apple store to purchase their blutooth keyboard. However, after a short period of use, I felt that having a separate device for occasional input was cumbersome.

After extensive research online, I came across the clamcase. It seemed like exactly what I was looking for in terms of form factor and functionality. I immediately ordered the clamcase for the iPad 2 and paid for the overnight shipping to receive it the next day. It arrived as expected and I was pleased with the packing of the case itself.

Getting the iPad 2 into the case is fairly simple and quick. The way that it holds the iPad in place seems very sturdy. The dock connector port, speaker and buttons all align nicely with the case cutouts. The keyboard also works great and pairs quickly and easily. It came pre-charged so I could use it right out of the box. I'm actually using the clamcase to write this review.

I purchased this because I was told that it was one of the better keyboards as far as protecting my iPad. The keyboard works as advertised and the function keys are pretty useful. The case itself is a bit on the heavier side, but the weight gives it a sturdy feel and helps when you use it in "laptop mode." What makes this case the one for me, is the stand. The clamcase hinge works great as far as turning your iPad into a laptop, and even better as a stand for watching movies and playing games.

I was hoping the Clamcase would be the perfect solution because I do a lot of typing and looked to be a quality product. If you do the "hunt" and "peck" method I suppose it would be ok but if you can type the keyboard is horrible. The keys are too tightly spaced so errors occur frequently but even worse is the SPACE BAR! The keys sit below the deck of the case (the area behind and around the keyboard) When you type and try to hit the space bar your thumbs hit the deck and barely touch the space bar so you have to raise you hands from the deck each time you want to hit the space bar in order to depress it fully! Does anyone at Clamcase know how to type? If so, have they actually done product testing and tried typing on this thing? Why wouldn't Clamcase taper the area behind the space bar so you can naturally type? and while they are at it, look to their competitors for a better designed keyboard with more space like, Targus.

I just recently upgraded to the "new" iPad from the first generation. I had a clamcase with my original iPad and loved it. I just received my ClamCase for the new iPad in the mail the other day. It's noticeably slimmer and lighter than the original, and still provides all that it promises.

The keyboard is quite similar to a netbook size, so it takes a little getting used to at first (its the same keyboard as the original model). It protects as well as any other case on the market, but the hinge is what sold me on this case. There just aren't a lot of cases out there that allow you to tilt your iPad to any angle just as you would a laptop. I use this case as a stand as much as I do a keyboard and I have yet to encounter another like it. Couple this with the protection and keyboard and its really the only accessory I use now.

I highly recommend the clamcase to anyone looking for the full package (protection, stand and keyboard.)

THE CLAMCASE KEYBOARD HAS A SERIOUS PROBLEM.
The keyboard is terrible.
The physical keyboard is the main reason anyone would buy the Clamcase, or any iPad keyboard case. If the keyboard design is bad, the case is useless. The Clamcase keyboard design is bad.
It is impossible to press the space bar key in normal typing position because the rim along the bottom edge of the space bar key is the same height as the space bar key.
This ergonomic design failure does not allow normal use of the keyboard. The user is required to employ constant over-compensation in order to use the space bar key, which defeats the entire purpose of the keyboard case.

THE CLAMCASE FALLS OVER.
The Clamcase claims to have a better way of securing the iPad into the case. The iPad does snap in tight. And the very nice, special hinge construction allows the iPad to be tightly positioned at any angle. Unfortunately, if the iPad panel is tilted back past a certain point, the iPad will fall right over taking the entire keyboard case with it.

THE CLAMCASE IS TOO HEAVY.
The Clamcase is too heavy.
Ironically, if the tilt and tumble problem described above were to ever be solved the only way to do that would be to add even more weight to the front of the keyboard panel!

GOUGED ON RETURNS.
Expect to pay your own return shipping and a 15% restocking fee on this overpriced terrible iPad keyboard case!
