rat packer's delight,
By Joe Komechak (Chicago,IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Clan in Chicago (Audio CD)
Recorded live in chicago in the early 60's,this cd captures the rat pack at it's best.it starts dino adlibing his way through a half a dozen songs, joking with the audience between lines. Then frank comes out and belts out some tunes with sammy&dean offstage with a mic throwing in some comments as he sings.then sammy comes out and does his set ,this time with frank&dean cracking wise as he tries to finish a song.then all three come out and take turns singing a joking with the crowd. This cd offer's a glimps at what it must have been like to see these showmen at the hieght of thier powers.it is the only cd I have been able to find that has sinatra/martin&lewis together live and it truly is a treasure.

Boys live,

This CD is a must have for those of you with great taste and a yearning for Vegas swank. This is the act for most of their shows . The live show keeps the music from beig dated. The best part of this recording is imagining how much fun Frank, Dean, and Sammy were having and the audience too. Remember, these guys are the definition of nightlife. Very good price too.

My gosh! Kim and I bought this for fun and can't tell you how much we enjoyed it, laughed, danced and generally sang along. I only wish there was a video to see them. We bought 5 more for family members!

The Machine that is the Rat Pack,

This review is from: Clan in Chicago (Audio CD)
Known by the public as the "Rat Pack" - but called "the Clan" or "the Summit" by the members - the group captured the pop culture cool in Las Vegas and Hollywood, with the central figures in the 1960s being Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis, Jr.
This recording is from a week-long appearance - November 26 to December 2, 1962 - at the infamous Villa Venice nightclub in suburban Chicago. There are a variety of albums that have been issued over the many years with tracks from the shows, with this release being a 1999 import that focuses more on the music than the comedic bits that kept the atmosphere extremely light. Martin opens the album with a set that features his barroom twists of lyrics, while things are played straight in the sets by Sinatra and Davis, Jr., with the latter in amazing form on "What Kind of Fool Am I?". Sinatra pushes the performance to new heights on "Nancy" and the shtick is shoved aside for a neat rendition of "Me and My Shadow" by Sinatra and Davis, Jr., with the latter and Martin having fun on "Sam's Song." The musicians are simply the best in the business and the audience packs a punch with world heavyweight champion Sonny Liston, but the energy under the spotlight is from the incredible performers who were riding the crest of their entertainment powers as a trio that would only abate at the end of the decade.
