5.0 out of 5 stars Review of the NEW, expanded edition

3.0 out of 5 stars Sound volume out of synch
Concert is enjoyable, but audience volume is way too loud and any speaking sections between songs way too low. Having to adjust the volume up and down throughout the whole performance gets old really quick.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review of the NEW, expanded edition, March 4, 2009

For serious fans of Irish folk music like me, who are incensed at how Sony has spit on its Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem's Columbia catalogue, the release of this hugely expanded version of one of the quartet's greatest live recordings is nothing short of an early Easter miracle.

It seems like everything is here -- all the songs (plus the two from the 1962 Carnegie Hall concert attached to the original 1963 release of this album), all the between-song dialogue, even the guitar/banjo tuning. Wait 'til you hear the fun, innocent references to John F. Kennedy (then the U.S. president and still 9 months from his assassination).

Without the visuals, you're not always sure what's going on with the banter, but it helps to know there were some people actually sitting *behind* the group during the St. Patrick's Day, 1963 concert. That fact isn't readily apparent in the miniscule version of this album released in '63.

Also, you quickly understand what Liam Clancy's referring to in his brilliant liner notes when he refers to audience participation. Again, not evident on the truncated original release, in this version you hear how boistrous the crowd is, shouting out songs it wants to hear to the point where Makem, amidst the competing requests, yells "shut up!" It's quite amusing.

Beyond this, the sound quality is excellent, the performances as energetic and feisty as the truncated original album suggested, and the CD packaging is excellent -- lots of never-before-seen pictures of the boys at the hall and an in-depth essay placing the boys in their time.

Absolutely worth buying!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another nice compilation of really nice Irish folk, December 31, 2001
The Clancy Brothers are always a winner in the Irish folk arena. Hard to rate them because I like just about everything they do. You can sense that the Brothers and Tommy Makem pour themselves into their music with such feeling and power and it will make you feel proud to be Irish even if you are a Thai Mexican (not necessarily a reflection of the reviewer...hahaha). But in all honesty the music will have you wanting to sing and maybe even drink a few pints of Guiness which, by the way, never hurt anyone from what I hear!

Throw this cd on, pour the Guiness in, and have some fun!

5.0 out of 5 stars Irish Music at its best, January 1, 2007
The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem brought Irish music to the masses in Ireland as well as America. This album, their third and last before signing with Columbia, is a fine example of their simple early work. With great rebel songs like Brennan on the Moor, Roddy McCorely and Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye, and lullabys like Castle of Dromore and Eileen Aroon, there is something for every Irish fan on this disc. A Great Buy!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars What wonderful musicians and music!, April 14, 2009
I was at this concert in 1963. This CD is a wonderful journey back in time for me. I had the album, but wore it out. It was not as complete as the CD, so there is even more to enjoy again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem Revisited, April 19, 2009
Having grown up listening to the original LP as a child, (brought back to Australia by my father after a business trip), I was surprised to discover it was still available, and even more delighted to note the re-issue includes the whole concert. The recording provides great music, and a real insight into both the Irish experience and the American Irish. What is nice about the live recording (remastered and very clear) is the natural spontaneity allowed by retaining the dialogue and commentry.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Good Album Expanded to a Great CD, March 31, 2009
When I first heard "The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem: In Person at Carnegie Hall", it was on vinyl and sounded great. I enjoyed it and discovered later it was only a fragment of the actual performance and a couple songs were not even taken from this historic 1963 concert. This double CD is the full length concert from St. Patrick's Day 1963. Though dated, as far as the commentary, this CD stands out as one of the greatest live folk albums of all-time. The group sounds fantastic and I truly enjoy the added dialogue between songs. Though at hart I still prefer vinyl, one of the benefits of digital recordings and CD's is the ability to squeeze so much more music into one package. You'll enjoy listening to this CD long past St. Patrick's Day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic - with a glitch, April 11, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
My very first Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem LP was this one - I still have the original vinyl and the CD. I fell in love with their music after one play. The extended, full concert is absolutely great. I only have one problem - on the original LP the final song was "The Parting Glass" which was the perfect song to end this concert. It's still the finale but Columbia Legacy has added two more after it. They were recorded earlier than the Paddy's Day concert but were included on the original album - WHY? They are great songs but why pretend that they were part of the original concert? There was enough material without including these two extraneous songs from an earlier concert. Despite the grousing about these two songs, this CD is highly, highly recommended to all fans of the Clancy/Makem tome and to all fans of Irish music. They were the ones that started it all.
