Clandestino,
By A Customer
This review is from: Clandestino (Audio CD)
Manu Chao's Clandestino was the biggest musical discovery for me in 1999. This CD is a musical journey full of surprises that will make you play it over and over again. It seems to me Clandestino came straight from Manu Chao's heart, mind and soul and that truly shows. The music paints very vivid pitcures and can not leave listener passive and uninterested. Intriguing and powerful, it is full of life and pleasent sounds, it is full of that special "universal language" that we so often forget, but crave in today's commercialized world. It will bring you up when you are down; it will cool you off when you need it; it will enrich you in every way music can do.

CLANDESTINO is one of the best albuns i've ever heard! totally pure and different from the usual stuff every artist plays - manu's got his own unique style, and yes, repeating rythms and lyrics during the whole cd. the fact is that we get into his mood, we feel we're elsewhere when we listen to this beauty. I highly recomend it to those who do not have limited heads! p.s.: and please, he does NOT sing in italian, but in brazilian PORTUGUESE, as one of the reviewers said... he's also FRENCH, and not mexican, as the same person wrote!

Re. the music: I have been listening to this cd regularly for over two years, and I still find new layers, new nuances. Pure unadulterated magic. Re. Manu Chao: father Galician; mother Basque(?); brought up in Paris with Algerians, Senegalese; lover of Latin America... Where is he from?? He would probably say that if you have to ask you'll never know.

This a beautiful summer CD to listen to with someone special. This is a calm CD when compared to mano negra, but you can feel the same tension and vibes hidden behind it.

Viva Manu Chau y Viva Galicia,

As all the reviews state, this is a fantastic disc. An exceptionally rich potpourri of musical styles that improves with each playing. I want to correct what some reviewers said though. I'm pretty sure that Manu is neither Mexican nor French but, rather, Spanish, and Gallego to be more precise. He's also probably not singing in Portuguese (along with Spanish, English and French), but in Gallego (Galician). Just my two cents worth.

Manu Chao sings, speaks, and raps, while constantly switching languages... the rhythm keeps changing, too, taking the listener on a kind of journey to Manu Chao's world. The second track - "King of the Bongo" is worth the price alone.

On the Lyrics,

Manu Chao's music is truly enjoyable because it has great Latin American rythms and sounds. Nevertheless, the lyrics may confuse those who are not familiar with the Mexican political landscape. The EZLN is not a political party, but rather a group of armed anarchists who wish to produce economical and political instability in the region by appealing to noble causes. An example of this is how the Subcomandante Marcos viewed the strikers at the National University (UNAM) as having "legitimate demands", when in reality they were asking for the lowering of academic standards and were a minority group rejected by the academic community. Having this in mind, we can continue enjoying the rythm of Manu Chao's music. Excellent album.

The voice of the EZLN,

Manu Chao is Mexican, with ties to the EZLN, a "peoples party" located principally within the Chiapas region, in the jungles near the Guatemala border... Young, pure of heart, living the dream of the Just Cause of his people, Manu sings in his native spanish, in english, french and italian... The music is inspirational, the lyrics ditto. The CD supports the cause of the EZLN freedom fighters, with several anthems to The Cause. Personally, I was moved...
