Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The rhyming couplets of Clap Your Hands by Lorinda Bryan Cauley will inspire young ones to move their bodies just as the fully clothed jolly animals and their human companions do.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1-- A crew of kids and animals, dressed in appealing combinations of comfortable odds and ends of clothing, responds to suggestions from Cauley's verse. They wiggle, purr, fly, tickle, somersault, kiss, and spin against the white background of double-page spreads. In a style much like Bruce Degen's, Cauley offers an ethnic mix of children tingling with energy and fun. Their unique motions and interactions imply plenty about the joy of movement and the value of individual interpretation. The jubilant mood of the characters' body language is reinforced by their facial expressions and captured in their eyes. The colors of the artist's mixed media (colored pencils, pastels, paints) are fresh and appealing. But what happens when this same blast of happy energy occurs and reoccurs in the same format page after page? A form of monotony--and, unfortunately, the verse's steady beat only reinforces it. Instead of staying caught up in the book's greater momentum, readers will start searching for details (How is this picture different from the last one?). It's too bad that this format isn't worthy of Cauley's vision; a book of hers that works 100% could be a whopper. In the meantime, let's applaud Clap Your Hands.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great fun! Try it before bathtime or before a car ride, October 10, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Clap Your Hands (Hardcover)
We have lots of fun with this book in my house. My kids like the fun instructions and I like that it's a long activity rhyme that helps dissipate some of their (usually boundless) energy. Great for rainy days, too, when a run through the park isn't an option. Author offers fun instructions like "Clap your hands, Stomp your feet, turn around, and take a seat" Goes on for quite some time, with pictures of animals and kids following the directions in case you're not exactly sure what she means. Long enough to tire me out! Highly recommended for energetic kids!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book - maybe not a good board book, July 7, 2008
This is one of those books designed for the fidgety story-time goer.

It's full of instructions - clap your hands, tell me your age, I'll tickle you if you tickle me, find something red, that sort of thing.

Great fun for kids to get to move around instead of sitting through a story, this might be a good way to end storytime!

But, because of those good points, board book format might not be the best way to go. The pictures are too small for moving around - you have to sit close to really see them - and some of the instructions are really too hard for the younger rip-up-books crowd anyway. You might be better off waiting a year or two and getting a normal edition instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars Parents Will Clap Their Hands, February 9, 2001
By
Parents will love reading this book to their children. It is meant to be read out loud and the motions acted out by the children. It has a wonderful rhyming text with good flow which is easy to read and lots of fun for children to act out. The illustrations are nice, but the children are so busy jumping and stomping their feet, they don't really seem them. It includes physical activities as well as learning tools "find something yellow, find something red, rub your tummy, pat your head". I enjoy this alot and my daughter loves me to read it to her.
