Works, but not with fluorescent lights,

I have an incandescent floor lamp and the Clapper works great with it. OTOH, another lamp is fitted with fluorescent bulbs, and the Clapper doesn't work at all. I called the manufacturer and only then was told that the Clapper will not work with a fluorescent fixture. Nowhere is that mentioned. Beware.

Worked Great For A Handicapped Lady,

My adult daughter is handicapped from an automobile accident and can not get up to turn on or off the lights. So, if no one was with her as it got dark she had to sit there in the dark until someone came. I gave her the clapper and it worked great for her. The amazing thing is, she has no fine motor skills and can not clap hard enough, so she just yells at it and it works!! She yells "On" and the lights respond and come on and yells "Off" and they go off. It has given me peace of mind and been a great comfort to us knowing that she can control the lights. The first one finally wore out, now I am buying another one.

More of a nuisance,
By C. Kim "PinkGirl" (Laguna Beach, CA) - See all my reviews

This little device was more of an irritation to me that I finally unplugged the sucker. I pluged a lamp that I have in my bedroom to the clapper and it would turn on and off at the slightest noise! If I dropped the remote on the floor, it would go on/off. If my TV made a loud noise, it would turn on/off. If I was talking on the phone, it would turn on/off. I used to joke that I had a strobe light in my bedroom, but it got too much for me to handle that I had to finally unplug it. It didn't come with a sensitivity switch and was VERY sensitive to sound, so in short, don't buy it unless you plan to live in silence.

Clapper is an Electrical Hazard,
By Mewser (South Bend, IN USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Clapper Sound Activated On/Off Switch, 1 Each (Health and Beauty)
I loved the idea of the Clapper. I live alone so the clapping sound wouldn't bother me and I looked forward to the convenience factor. My first Clapper lasted about 4 months and then mysteriously stopped working, but the dead unit did smell suspiciously funny - like an electrical short.
Did I learn my lesson? Oh, no! I went ahead and purchased another Clapper some months later. The night before last, the lamp I connected this one to started blinking. I checked the lightbulb and it was OK. It was only went I got down close to the Clapper plugged into the outlet that I heard the dreaded sizzling sound and saw a flash of electricity. Once again the Clapper crapped out, this time in a different lamp, different outlet. Will I never learn? Thank goodness nothing happened due to the highjinks of this faulty device. Can you say "housefire"? Again, how dumb am I? Is the unit UL-approved and, if so, have any other complaints been lodged about it? How does one find this out? I like my gadgets, but "buyer beware" on this one.

The Clapper Is A Fire Hazard!,
By sable (Maine) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Clapper Sound Activated On/Off Switch, 1 Each (Health and Beauty)
I bought a Clapper for my daughter for Christmas. Not only was it difficult to get it to work but two weeks later it started to smoke! I don't even want to think about what could have happened if I hadn't been there! The Clapper is a piece of junk and a fire hazard! I would NOT recommend this product for anybody unless you want to burn your house down!

After reading the reviews here I decided to order a Clapper anyway, for a floor lamp with a hard-to-reach switch. Like others, we found that the lamp kept spontaneously turning on and off. So we lowered the sensitivity and the Clapper began working perfectly. For a while. When winter came I bought a small stack of firewood that I placed a few inches in front of the Clapper in our living room. The Clapper seems to be sensitive to having objects placed in front of it -- the firewood created something of an echo effect that the Clapper is very sensitive to, and we can't adjust the sensitivity of the thing to keep it from turning on and off by itself at the very softest noise. So alas, I had to unplug the Clapper. But it had worked perfectly well up until then.

Clap On (maybe)... Clap Off (maybe)... Clap On, Clap Off, A Crapshoot,
By
This review is from: The Clapper Sound Activated On/Off Switch, 1 Each (Health and Beauty)
What a disappointment! The device just wasn't predictable. Sometimes it would do as expected, sometimes not. It was just a crapshoot. Finally unplugged it and it's in a drawer somewhere. Yes, I played with the sensitivity with no success. Getting up to turn lights on and off was far less effort and aggravation than trying to convince The Clapper to do its thing. Save your money and look elsewhere.

Great for Christmas tree lights!!!,
By
This review is from: The Clapper Sound Activated On/Off Switch, 1 Each (Health and Beauty)
We got a Clapper as a white elephant Christmas gift 6 years ago. I brought it home and plugged our Christmas tree lights into it and we've been using it annually ever since. It is great for that purpose! I've seen remote controlled light switches for Christmas trees lately, but when you have kids around it is a guarantee that you will lose the remote. It is also great fun to see our preschoolers trying to clap on/clap off our tree...as well as all the (non-Clapper) trees at our friends' houses. The only negative is it can be tricky to adjust the sensitivity so the clapper works for your claps but not, say, the sound of the dog jumping off the sofa onto the wood floor.

The Legend Lives On,

What can you say about The Clapper? You clap, it turns on and off. You laugh, it turns on and off. We won't mention what happens during intimate moments! Seriously, it's a lot of fun, reliable, and very convenient. I'm glad I purchased it!

A life saver for disabled persons,

My wife had a stroke, went through rehab clinic and home care therapy and is recovering, but she kept falling in the bedroom.
She could not turn on and off her bedside lamp. I thought about the TV ads for the Clapper Sound activator and ordered one from Amazon. Now my wife can turn off her lamp to sleep and turn on her lamp to see how to get out of bed and keep from falling. |
