Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Watching this compilation of 12 videos and performances from the past 15 years, it's easy to forget that this is the same Eric Clapton who once quit the legendary Yardbirds because they were becoming "too pop." Still, there's always a touch of the blues in Clapton's music, even in a piece of pure fluff like "Blue Eyes Blue." And when a great Clapton song and performance are matched to arresting visuals, the result can be magical. Cases in point: "Motherless Child," a traditional acoustic blues shot in beautiful, sepia-toned black and white; "Change the World," Clapton's brilliant, Grammy-winning collaboration with Babyface; and "Pilgrim," the hypnotic title track from his recent studio album given a riveting video treatment by director Lili Fini Zanuck. Clapton may still be something of a chameleon (as always, his appearance changes radically from video to video), and he may still be most comfortable simply standing (or sitting) there playing his guitar. But Clapton Chronicles leaves no doubt that he's getting through the video age with his dignity and artistry intact. Hint: buy this, not the audio CD of the same name. - -Sam Graham

5.0 out of 5 stars Great collection of marvelous videos by EC!, October 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Clapton Chronicles - The Best of Eric Clapton (DVD)
This video collection is as cool as the matching CD is lame! From the solitude of EC playing acoustic guitar on a soundstage on "Tears In Heavan" to the very hip black and white "Motherless Child" to the rain soaked "Pretending" these are all very tasty clips. The only drawbacks are two cuts from "unplugged" and one from "24nights" which are already commercially available..but understandable inclusions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clapton, December 4, 1999
Starting off with "Forever Man," probably the worst video on the tape, then, to "Pretending", a great, wet video with plenty of good guitar, fallowed by "Bad Love" which gives "Forever Man" a run for it's money in "bad videos." Up next is one of Clapton's most romantic songs, "Wonderful Tonight." This is a great, slow version of the song. Then it's "Tears in Heaven," another song flaunting Clapton's incredible lyrical power. The video itself is a good one... similer to the "Unplugged" video. Next is "Layla" and "Running on Faith." Both great, and off of the "Unplugged" video. "Mottherless Child" has to be one of the best video's on the tape; in a goldish black-and-white. The song of course is awesome too! Then is Clapton's "Change the World." His Grammy-winning song, with a good, solid video to back it up. Then is "My Father's Eyes." The video isn't the greatest, but the lyrics and the voice make up for it all. Up next is "Pilgrim," that has a good video. The only problem with it, is that it's pretty long. And last, but sure not least, is "Blue Eyes Blue." off of the "Runaway Bride" soundtrack... although you could never tell. All of the movie scenes were cut out of it. Nevertheless, a good video, and a good song. If you like Clapton, like music vidoes, and like a good time: Buy this!

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing as a DVD, January 23, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Clapton Chronicles - The Best of Eric Clapton (DVD)
I'm fairly new to DVD's, so when I bought this one I thought all DVD's took advantage of the superior sound available through the use of dolby digital 5.1, like James Taylor's, Live at the Beacon. This one doesn't it's in stereo. While I love Clapton, I don't HAVE to see him to enjoy him, so if I had it to do all over I'd have bought the CD. At least with the CD, I could have enjoyed his great music in the car as well as at home. So be sure and check what audio format is being utilized BEFORE making your purchase.
