4.0 out of 5 stars A SURE WINNER FOR YOUNG READERS, December 19, 2010
This review is from: Clarice Bean: The Utterly Complete Collection (Paperback)
If you're wondering about a gift for a favorite niece, granddaughter or daughter, here 'tis. Everyone's favorite mischievous miss now makes an appearance in a boxed set that holds Clarice Bean Spells Trouble; Utterly Me, Clarice Bean; a Clarice Bean notebook with plenty of pages for jotting thoughts, reminders, and other important data, plus a cherry red Clarice Bean pencil.

The 5 ½" by 7 ½" notebook has both blank and graph pages, each with a Clarice profundity at the bottom. We find such gems as "Sometimes things are easier if you don't say what you think." and "Sometimes it is a help to snap a pencil if you are feeling utterly stressed."

Clarice Bean Spells Trouble is, of course, the story of Clarice's desperate attempts to be in the school play. Getting into trouble is what Clarice seems to do best, almost as well as Karl Wrenbury, the naughtiest boy in school. A spelling bee is almost her downfall yet she soldiers on.

Utterly Me, Clarice Bean finds Clarice feeling deserted when her best friend, Betty, suddenly disappears. Then, of all things, she's paired with Karl for a class project. However, when a winner's trophy turns up missing and Karl is accused of taking it Clarice quickly emulates her favorite girl detective Ruby Redfort and gets to the bottom of things.

Each book is illustrated with the off the wall illustrations that we associate with Clarice as well as the slanting script.

A sure winner for young readers!

- Gail Cooke
