Buddy at his best,
This review is from: Mr Clarinet (Special Packaging) (Audio CD)
This album consists of a long unavailable selection of some of his best work recorded on the 8th, and 20th April 1953 by Norman Granz for Verve. He is in the company of Kenny Drew, Milt Hinton, and Art Blakey. His playing is absolutely superb and this selection illustrates his supreme mastery of the instrument and his rare ability to interpret bebop on the clarinet. This CD is wholeheartedly recommended as essential listening for all lovers of the jazz clarinet and is an absolute "must have" for all DeFranco fans.

Just great! Marvelously outstanding! I would love to hear Buddy perform Mozart's clarinet concerto like B. Goodman did. But you won't hear anything like that here. Instead, Buddy actually plays some bop. That makes this a rare item. Additionally you can hear a little Arty Shaw and G. Gerswin in his style of play. Pure class in jazz. Also Art Blakey on drums (to boot). You can't beat that. One more thing. It comes in a soft-shelled jacket with a sleeve for the cd itself (like a miniature LP). Ain't that cool!

.First there was Johnny Dodds: 1927-1928 ; 1927-28 . Then there was Pee Wee Russell Ask Me Now! . There was Jimmy Noone: Three Little Words/I Know That You Know . And Barney Bigard: 1944-1945 . And Buster Bailey: 1925-1940 . And of course there were Goodman and Shaw: Together Again! (1963 Reunion with Lionel Hampton, Teddy Wilson & Gene Krupa) . 1945-1946 . But finally, there's Buddy DeFranco who's rock-solid, sweetly reasonable, and swings like mad! Look for Buddy on these other outstanding Verve records: Buddy De Franco and Oscar Peterson Quartet ; The Complete Quartets & Quintets . Swing on, sweet chariot! .
