The NZ503 is a great radio and works just as advertised. Navigation works well and has all the points of interest in its database. Installation was a snap for me since I was removing a single DIN Pioneer stereo and replaced it with this. Overall I did spend about four hours on the install. The manual came with a good wiring diagram, but lacked specific instruction details. That part could be improved. The features that really standout for me are the iPod/iPad interface, the Bluetooth telephone and the Navigation. Unit comes with a remote and i did purchase additionally the CCA-750 cable for the iPod and iPad interface.

I have an older car which belongs to another member of our family, and wanted to spruce it up a bit with a new radio.

Since this car required a single DIN unit, I did my homework and came up with the Clarion NZ503. Let me describe what I see as the pros and cons.

PROS:
Has everything you want from a system, and with add-on's (SiriusXM v200, THD400 for HD radio, etc.) it comes to about the same price as you would get from other name brand units like the Pioneer and Kenwood. Note: I would have chosen the Pioneer AVIC N5 if it was available, but it seems to be discontinued. The HD is crystal clear with the THD400, and its easy to browse for new channels, select sub-channels, and listen to just about any program you want despite driving through parts of Georgia and West Virginia where there are fewer channels available and the reception on regular FM can be spotty. The Sirius (as always) works like a charm, even with the antenna mounted inside and on the top right of my dashboard on an old Ford Crown Victoria. The USB dongle plays video and audio easily from any device, and since I don't use Apple products, I can't report on iPod/iPhone functionality but other reviewers report it works just fine.

The touch screen is actually better than the Pioneer AVIC I installed on a friends car a couple years back. The screen is more responsive and navigates more naturally left and right through the menus. A big central button below the display easily calls up the onscreen touch menu, and from there you can navigate EITHER left or right through the three menu sets with ease ... there is no way to get to "the end" and get stuck there, from either the right or left direction, like I found with the AVIC navigation menu.

On paper the Clarion NZ503 has it all, in reality however its a so-so unit, everything that you need to add on is very expensive, some other units at this price have some of the add on features of this unit built in, one thing that bothers me so much is for $600 you don't get RDS (WTF!!!) radios at $85 have this built in.

The radio screen when the screen is open, is just so bland and boring, I really don't get it, Clarion spend all this R&D time and effort into developing this unit then forget about the basics, if it hadn't have cost me $160 to have it installed I would return it, not that its a bad unit because it isn't, it just seems to me like they have overlooked the basics, man this unit could have been soooo good.

I hope clarion see this review and develop a firmware update: For RDS & to make the radio screen look nicer.

I`m hoping that Clarion Care will comment on the issue that I have, as I cant find any technical support, the literature says that the screen will will retract when the vehicle is powered off, well my screen stays in the open position when I power my car off, I expected much more from a major brand like Clarion, if I cant get this issue resolved I will be sending my unit back and buying something else, something that you can get technical support on, c`mon Clarion back up your products with some after sales service.

The Clarion promised to be a great GPS etc. but falls short in some categories. First the screen brightness is way too low, nearly impossible to read in bright sun. Next some of the software does not work, for instance speed limits are always 50 MPH no matter.
The menu system is OK and does its job switching from maps to XM etc.
The DVD player is fine for reading instructions etc.
I am in process of buying another brand because of the screen brightness issue
