It will help control allergies, but sinus sufferers looking to decongest-dry out must seek the Claritin-D formulation instead.

This is effective, but pricey. Generics are almost equal, but a word about generics: they use the basic drug formula, but are free to use any delivery additives they wish. Those additives do change how it reacts in your body, for some...

5.0 out of 5 stars Claritin is a great Medication for Allergies, September 2, 2005
This review is from: Claritin 24 Hour Allergy, 30-Tablets (Health and Beauty)
Claritin (Loratidine) is a medication in the class of anti-histamines. Histamine is a chemical in our cells that is released during an allergy attack. Histamine causes all the symptoms of allergies: sneezing, nasal congestion, itching, hives, etc. Being an anti-histamine, Claritin blocks the action of histamine in the body.

Claritin replaced Benadryl (Diphenhydramine) as the #1 doctor prescribed allergy medication, the reason being that Claritin does not have any drowsiness as a side-effect like Benadryl has. Benadryl has very significant sleepiness as a side-effect, and this limited its use in people who needed to operate cars, machinery, or needed to have full-attention in their jobs. The sleepiness of Benadryl was so marked, that manufacturers marketed it as a sleeping aid! (Diphenhydramine is the component in Tylenol PM or Excedrine PM, it is also in all the sleeping pill formulations). Fortunately for allergy sufferers, Claritin has no sleepiness as a side-effect, in fact, Claritin has virtually NO side effects, which makes it an excellent medication to take if you are taking other medications as well. Plus, Claritin WORKS to counter allergy symptoms. I developed a form of full-body hives that persisted for over a year, and Claritin was a God-send for me. Without Claritin, my life would have been miserable.

Up until a few years ago, Claritin was a prescription medication and was the mainstay for doctors to prescribe for allergies. Once its potential for abuse was determined to be nil, and its safety factor proven, it was released on the market as an over-the-counter allergy medication.

Claritin still is expensive, as the medication is still "owned" by a major drug company. Until its lease expires and it can be marketed as the generic Loratidine, consumers will have to ante up the money if they want the best over-the-counter allergy medication available. If you can't or won't afford Claritin, then the cheaper alternative is Benedryl (Diphenhydramine), and you put up with the drowsiness.

Hope this helps.

4.0 out of 5 stars Helps with the Eyes, but Lacks in the Runny Nose Department, May 1, 2004
By
Michael Crane (Orland Park, IL USA) - See all my reviews
As I've said, I experience spring allergies that cause me A LOT of discomfort. I'm usually miserable for weeks with watery and itchy eyes and a runny nose that just LOVES to give me problems. So, I have to take something to try to ease the discomfort somewhat.

Claritin does a great job of easing that discomfort. While it may not solve the problem entirely, I find that it does wonders for the watery and itchy eyes, which is usually my biggest problem. When I take Claritin, it does a great job of decreasing that factor. My eyes get clear, they very rarely feel itchy, and it's a problem I don't have to worry about.

However, Claritin seems to lack in the runny nose department. It does nothing for my nose. In fact, I had to buy a nasal pump to take care of my nose, which seems to be working a lot better. With how much these pills cost, you'd think that it'd really take care of the nose as well. Then again, it may vary with different people. I just know that it doesn't help me a lot in that area.

The plus side is that the pills are easy to use. You only take one a day, which is a lot better than having to take pills every four to six hours. Just take one a day, and you're set. You don't have to worry about taking another one again until the next day, so it's easy to keep track of how many doses you've taken.

The downside is the price. They're very expensive. I'm sure there are other brands out there that probably cost less that do basically the same thing, but I don't know of any at the moment. I just use this. And the other downside is that it really seems to be lacking in helping the runny noses (again, maybe this varies from person to person).

All in all, Claritin does more than a mediocre job of helping my allergies. It really takes care of the watery and itchy eyes, which I'm grateful for. While it may be expensive and it may not cure or solve every allergy problem you have, it's worth checking out. I admit that it doesn't cure all of my problems, but I know I'd be in a lot worse shape if I didn't take it. -Michael Crane

This is effective, but pricey. Generics are almost equal, but a word about generics: they use the basic drug formula, but are free to use any delivery additives they wish. Those additives do change how it reacts in your body, for some people. I would recommend Claritin and not a knockoff for precisely that reason.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very close to expiration!!!!, September 17, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought it from BuyBelowSale. The packaging slip has this comment: "Comments: *****these are DATED JAN 2010***** OUR LOWER PRICES ARE BASED ON THE SLIGHTLY DAMAGED PACKAGING . SOME ITEMS WITH DATING ALSO HELPS WITH A LOWER PRICE SO PLEASE READ!! !!!!!BADLY DAMAGED PACKAGE!!!!!".

This critical information is NOT on the main page of the product. You will have to click to see from multiple buyers to read the warning.

The expiration of January 2010 is just 4 months from now. So chances are I'll not be able to use the entire package beafore it expires. What a waste. So buyers beware!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great!, February 1, 2005

I guess it might depend somewhat on the person, and/or various placebo effects, but my allergies have always been solved by Claritin. I have tried cheaper generic allergy medications and a cheaper brand call Nuprin, but they just didn't cut it for me. I'd have to take several in order for them to be effective. Claritin has always worked!

The product that arrived is called "CLARITYN" and is in packaging completely different from the true Claritin pictured on amazon.com or in stores. The pills do not match the true Claritin pills. Buy at your own risk. Who knows what chemicals are in this.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I experienced the same problem as another user above when I received this package, which wasn't on the site when I ordered it:

The packaging slip has this comment: "Comments: *****these are DATED MAR 2010***** OUR LOWER PRICES ARE BASED ON THE SLIGHTLY DAMAGED PACKAGING . SOME ITEMS WITH DATING ALSO HELPS WITH A LOWER PRICE SO PLEASE READ!! !!!!!BADLY DAMAGED PACKAGE!!!!!".

This critical information is NOT on the main page of the product. In addition, I didn't receive Claritin, it was Zyrtec. Hopefully it will have the same affect on allergies, but this definitely should have been listed correctly as Zyrtec and NOT Claritin. Also, it's only 4 months until they expire. This should have been listed on the ad, where it can be seen, prior to purchase, and prior to receiving the item.

Aunt Sher (Pennsylvania) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Claritin 24 Hour Allergy, 30-Tablets (Health and Beauty)
Product works fine. When I made my purchase the picture showed the package with 10 free tablets. They sent me boxes of 30 instead of 40.
That made the price higher than my local store. Will not buy here again.

2.0 out of 5 stars Be careful about EXP Date = 01/2010, December 4, 2009

If you click to see the seller's comments:

Comments: ***THESE ARE DATED 01/2010***** OUR LOWER PRICES ARE BASED ON THE SLIGHTLY DAMAGED PACKAGING . SOME ITEMS WITH DATING ALSO HELPS WITH A LOWER PRICE SO PLEASE READ!! !!!!! DAMAGED PACKAGE!!!!!

So how quickly can you consume 30 tablets? If you follow drug makers dosage 1 daily. So you may not even have time to finish the tablets before they expire.
