Claritin (Loratadine) is an antihistamine that is used for typical allergy symptoms, such as a stuffy or runny nose, itchy watery eyes, scratchy throat (due to allergies), and rashes, itching, and hives. (It can also be used in some cases to limit asthma attacks).

Antihistamines block the release of histamine, a naturally occurring substance in the body that produces all the allergy symptoms we want to get rid of.

There are several antihistamines you can purchase over the counter, Claritin (Loratadine) is a second generation antihistamine, and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is the older first generation product. Claritin will be more expensive, as it is the newer of the two. Loratadine is also available as a cheaper generic product and is just as effective as the Brand name products of Claritin and Alavert.

The usual dose of Loratadine is 10 mg a day. This offers an advantage over the first generation antihistamines (Benadryl), in that they are dosed every 8 hours. The main and most significant advantage of Loratadine over the first generation antihistamines is that Loratadine will not cause drowsiness and has less overall side effects and less adverse interactions with other medications (and alcohol).

People with liver disease should discuss the use of Loratadine with their doctor. Pregnant women should avoid using Loratadine as studies have shown a risk to the fetus.

Claritin (Loratadine) is very effective in treating allergy symptoms. I like the non-sedating quality and the once daily dosing.

This stuff made me sicker than a dog. Heart palpitations, shaking, insomnia, frequent urination, dry mouth, headache, irritability, confusion. If you read around the internet, which I did after I took it, unfortunately, all of these side effects are common.

Pressure Headaches, uncontrollable bouts of sneezing, grogginess from allergies and sinus problems are what ragweed and other seasonal allergies do to me. I hesitated trying this product before now because I assumed it was an everyday all the time type of product. It's not! I woke sneezing and stopped up with a horrible headache that pounded with each sneeze. Within 30 minutes of taking this tiny pill my headache was gone and I'd stopped sneezing! I was so impressed! I waited a few days and took another one for the same symptoms and once again I got relief. The product is a little on the pricey side, especially if you are one of those who have non seasonal allergies but fight it daily. I have experienced only one side effect. The product makes me tired. Of course so do the headaches. I'm sure it would have a different effect on different people. For this reason I do not suggest purchasing this in bulk until you try it for yourself a few times. I do recommend trying this product! I hope it helps others as well as it has me!

I am allergic to fairly mainstream things: dust, mold, cats, and many pollens.

Claritin doesn't do a thing for my sneezing (the uncontrollable 6 in a row kind, makes your eyes water, then starts again 10 minutes later kind).

I get hives if I encounter catness on my skin (touching a cat, or hugging somebody who has cats).

Claritin (Loratadine) does nothing for that, either.

I am still searching for something that does work without making me drowsy. Chlor-Trimeton (chlorapheniramine maleate) does work for my allergies (both sneezing and hives) but makes me very drowsy, and unable to do my work if I take it.

Claitin-D (Loratadine and Pseudoephedrine) does nothing for the allergies but, boy does it boost my mood and productivity! SPEEEEEEEEEEED!!!!!!! Then when it wears off I wannna die. So I only tried that 3 times.

I remain in search of something that will help with the sneezing and hives while still allowing me to work at a job requiring attentiveness.

I ordered and just received Claritin 24 hour allergy tablets from amazon/Iskolive 12 Inc. The medication expires in September 2014. These sellers on Amazon are lousy and Good for Nothing. Every time I order something , it is either EXPIRED or ABOUT TO EXPIRE. You can NOT trust these people. They would DUMP anything and everything on a customer/consumer. Every time I write a review that Amazon should Monitor these CHEATS / Troublemakers, it happens More and More. Then it is trouble of returning the Junk and wait for credit. I still trust Amazon and keep getting things from them but these ???? People keep making more and more trouble.

I was hoping the Claritin would help with my allergies, as I was extremely fatigued, which is a symptom of my allergies. Yes, I did feel better(not as tired), however, I have been getting up numerous times during the night with frequency issues. Will probably stop the product to see if these issues abate.
