Makes My DNA Dance,
By Deinara (Hamilton, Ohio USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Clarity (MP3 Download)
ClarityI have yet to play this song only once....the least amount of times I have listened to it is around five times in a row (maybe 6 or 7), and the most I have listened....the time I played it for a couple of hours or so (while I was working on a project). This song should have the slogan....."bettcha' can't just listen once!" (Of course for me that is the case with so much of John's music) This song has such an infectious melody...that puts me in such a good mood, and makes me so upbeat, happy...it is like a drug...it makes my DNA molecules dance, and beguiles my brain to take me to a happy place. If this song had no words....I would love it anyway. The music is the most wonderous thing about it! My favorite part of the lyrics is the creative way he describes his fear and worry, and the fascinating notion of "bending light" to freeze frame "a moment of clarity" in time...to hang on to that moment for as long as you wanted. Sadly, each moment is a once-in-a-lifetime event that is over as soon as it happens. You can remember it, reflect on it, learn and grow from it...but never again, "first time" experience it. Overall, I like the imagery created by all of the lyrics to the song....except for one small section that my brain, heart, and dancing dna have problems imaging. The section about "time being wasted in the afternoon and sacred month of June". I love this song so much, however, that I forgive that bit of befuddlement. Najee, a jazz artist, has a rendition of the song on his album Rising Sun, and the Vitamin String Quartet does a tribute to John's album "Heavier Things", Heavier Strings: A String Quartet Tribute to John Mayer's Heavier Strings, that has a version of the song. I like both arrangements very much. This is the only one of John's songs that I have heard other artists do that I would buy (and I did). Of the many version of the song available for download...I like this studio version over live versions for sale. For my ear, the song lends itself best to purity...and in the live versions with loud audience feedback and extended rift/patter by John, it is a bit too cluttered for my taste. I prefer to listen to "Clarity" with...well.. clarity :) |
