Review of "Clark Plays Guitar" from "BeetCafe.com" By: Gregory C. Johnson The guitar has ruled the sound of Rock music from the beginning... So begins the liner notes of the Clark Plays Guitar CD from Clark Colborn. Colborn is the man behind or should we say in front of Clark Plays Guitar. He's right. The guitar has had an incredible impact upon rock. Clark Plays Guitar is an instrumental compilation of what makes the guitar great; biting chords, haunting leads, and melodic harmonies. Listening to the CD takes you back to the days when Randy Rhodes and Eddie Van Halen turned playing guitar into an art form. Colborn has compiled a twelve song selection for the Clark Plays Guitar CD. All the compositions are Colborn's and he performs or programs all of the instruments. The song styles range from hard driving rock in "Return From Oblivion" and "Smoke and Mirrors" to the melodic with "Unconditional" and "Bittersweet". Yes, it's metal. Yes, it's progressive. And yes, I like it. The more I listen to this CD, the more I like it. So if you like metal, Clark Plays Guitar is worth a listen. And by the way, if you are reading this Clark and you need a bass player... © Gregory C. Johnson / Beetcafe.com --www.beetcafe.com

Review

Clark Plays Guitar is the musical force known as Clark Colborn; a serious and at times, comical songwriter that has a great mind. Before I get to this 12-track CD of his I must point out that Clark has really done something I've never seen as far as press kits go. The so-called dreaded "bio" sheet we reviewers get either prop the band on a pedestal or have no real means of explaining anything and dribbles on about weird forces and stories that pertain to nothing as far as valuable information on the band or artist itself. So what does Clark do so differently? His was done in comic book form...what an idea! Kudos goes out to Heather Keister for the artwork (www.quirkysdomain.com) and the whole concept of story, dialogue and everything else was Clark's brainstorm. The comic is "Truthman" versus "Bull McBlarney" or in plain English, individual and independent artists versus the corporates that support trends and anything fad-ish that'll make them a boatload of money. It's humorous and at the same time has a point and moral to the story. The music on this release goes through phases of Rock/Metal and Blues with a little humor at times as far as song titles go. One title on here was purposely used for the ridiculous clichés that 80's Metal bands used all the time in their lyrics or song titles (stuff about fantasy creatures, evil, etc-- you get the idea). Clark shows alot of diversity no matter what genre he's making his compositions from. He's also one of those superheroes of multi-purpose talents being able to play a few instruments in his repetoire. I'd say his style is somewhere in the balance of Blues Saraceno, Jobo, Bochar and Chaz DePaolo with hints of Vinnie Moore. These are just references however as Clark is definitely something quite different in terms of the way he writes and handles his music. The leads and rhythms are catchy and inspiring; just the whole damn cd is impressive. This guy possesses a good mind and attitude, so make sure you take the advice f --Quintessence

5.0 out of 5 stars can't believe I'm the first reviewer, October 19, 2008
This review is from: Clark Plays Guitar (Audio CD)
"Clark Plays Guitar" is a great album. Not merely a few good songs, but an entire CD-length composition that's coherent and without a single bad track. If you're into instrumental rock, you'll really enjoy this.

What surprised me most is how much variety there is here. Colborn gives you some heavy metal with songs like "Return to Oblivion" and "Stainless." But he also experiments -- and, in doing so, makes this album truly exciting to listen to -- with the unique and almost dreamlike sounds of "Unconditional" and "Ethereal Dancer." Those two songs alone make "Clark Plays Guitar" worth its price.

I found this album by pure luck while playing around with the Pandora music recommendation service one day. I'm really glad I did.
