Editorial Reviews

Review

“Clark loves everything about his life at Theodore Roosterfish Elementary, but his supersize enthusiasm is hard for the other fish to handle... The full-color artwork in a cartoon style is pleasant and fun.” (School Library Journal)

From the Back Cover

Clark is a shark with zing, bang, and boom. Clark zooms into school, crashes through the classroom, and is rowdy at recess. Clark loves life—but when his enthusiasm is too much for his friends, Clark's teacher, Mrs. Inkydink, helps him figure out a way to tone it down.

Clark the Shark celebrates boisterous enthusiasm—and knowing when it's time for indoor voices!

If you are an educator, this is a really helpful resource to teach self-control, thinking about how your behavior impacts others, and using self-talk to keep yourself focused. Usually after the first week of school, the behavior honeymoon is over. That's when you need to reach into your book basket and grab Clark the Shark. He is a sweet shark with good intentions but all over the place when it comes to being focused on learning. We need creative approaches when it comes to challenging kids. The students who are struggling with paying attention and being disruptive need empathetic strategies. I plan on rolling out a cute little lesson plan using a shark puppet - I have a feeling I will be referring to Clark MANY TIMES throughout the year. This is a winner folks.

I really liked the lesson in this story and the choice of undersea characters to make it even more appealing to young kids. My only reason for knocking it down a star was the word choices on one page. The annoying, over-used, trendy word "gi-normous" when enormous or gigantic would have worked just as well. Then a few sentences later, the phrase "oops, my bad!" I really did like the book overall, but the I was disappointed to see those included.

Both the book and the matching stuffed animal are cute! I look forward to reading Clark the Shark Dares to Share next year. Clark is quite the boy child, full of energy and excitement for school, but he's got a lot to learn. There is a time and a place and Clark has to work on his exuberance. Then a new kid comes to school and Clark can use his new knowledge to share wisdom to grow on.

Thanks to HC.

My son loves sharks and insisted on checking this book out from our library. I could see this book being great for those kids who get in trouble for being "active" in preschool and kindergarten. So often, that behavior is labelled "bad" or "troublesome," which is kind of sad for kids so young... So what I like about this book is how it just says that Clark "loves life" and is excited/enthusiastic, and the teacher and Clark himself figure out how he can act appropriately, while still keeping that enthusiasm (at home and on the playground). I think that's a great message.

I use this book with my 4th graders. It's a quick read, really funny, but also makes a point to make my students think about their behavior. Use it to teach literary elements, sequence (have students draw a comic strip), author's purpose, etc. I recently used it as a fun way to practice texted based evidence. Did Clark the Shark improve his behavior? How do you know this? Cite evidence(s) from the book.

My 4.5 year old really enjoyed this book right from the start thanks to the sea animals while I enjoyed the lessons included in the story. Like many boys his age he can get a little over stimulated and needs to be reminded there is a time and a place for certain behaviors. The book covered behaving in class, in the lunchroom and on the playground which were perfect for a kid his age.
