Clark Terry,
By Bomojaz (South Central PA, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Clark Terry (Audio CD)
Here's Clark's first full-length album, recorded in 1955, and he's surrounded himself with top-notch players (Jimmy Cleveland, Cecil Payne, Horace Silver, Oscar Pettiford, Art Blakey) and the great arranger Quincy Jones. Quincy is most inventive on SWAHILI and DOUBLE PLAY, and Oscar Pettiford is prominently featured throughout (on both bass and cello). Silver is in a deep groove on the slow blues SLOW BOAT, and at the opposite end of the spectrum is the way up-tempo CHUCKLES where everyone is cookin' on tremendous heat. KITTEN is another blues and has a good round of solos from everybody. Four bonus tracks from a 1954 10" album are also included; here the featured players are Lucky Thompson, Tal Farlow, and Urbie Green. Lucky is terrific on THE MAN I LOVE, and Tal takes a fluid guitar solo on MAMBLUES. This is a very fine CD spotlighting early Clark Terry - not to mention lots of space for his sidemen, too.
