I had purchased our first encyclopedia of wine in 2000 before a trip to Italy. It was Oz Clark's and it became our bible of wine. Realizing that it was out of date, I purchased this book for our trip to Spain and it did not disappoint. It is never out of reach in our wine room. The book stores are FULL of wine books and it can be mind-boggling. You really cannot go wrong with this one.

Oz Clarke is one of the best known British wine writers. I hadn't seen his previous pocket wine guides, but this one seems well put together with good organization and a good selection of wines. There's a good range of price scales and wine styles (the guide isn't a "vintage" guide populated almost exclusively with pricey (though excellent) Bordeaux and Burgundy wines nor is it a budget guide to the best mass produced Australian wines with pictures of cute animals on the labels) and some solid opinions. I can tell what Oz Clarke likes from this book, and that's why you'd buy the book.
