Clarks Wallabees have NEVER disappointed!, July 16, 2011
Yes, I know - over a hundred bucks for a "casual" shoe... but they are SO worth it.
I've been wearing Wallabees since 1970. I started with the original Clarks, then the Spanish versions (excellent leather, by the way), then a dearth of many years of cheaper imported knockoffs. Finally, a few years back, Clarks returned to these shores, albeit now manufactured in China.
The quality and materials are still the Wallabees I remember, just made in Asia.
I love the comfort and durability - but I always buy the Sand Tan which is hard to keep clean. I do not recommend wearing them in the rain (they're suede - they stain if not completely clean), and DEFINITELY do not use them in snow or ice (too slippery). Besides that, they are the only casual shoe I wear, even for walking. In most cases, I have found these shoes more comfortable than athletic shoes, and it's the only shoe I like to use for driving.
In forty years, I've only tossed one pair (not made by Clarks) for breakage of the top stitching. They have never worn through at the sole. I typically use them for car work or in the yard after they can't be cleaned anymore. Then they finally go off to the thrift store - dirty, but still thoroughly useable.
Forty years with the same style? You bet! My comfort comes first!
