Editorial Reviews

Anat Cohen - celebrated the world over for her expressive virtuosity on clarinet and saxophone, not to mention the sheer joie de vivre in her charismatic stage presence - presents the latest record of her evolution with Claroscuro, her sixth album as a bandleader. Claroscuro takes its title from the Spanish word describing the play of light and shade (chiaroscuro in Italian). The album ranges from deliciously buoyant dances to darkly lyrical ballads, with live-in-the-studio spontaneity a priority; moreover, Claroscuro showcases Cohen's fluency in a global set of styles, from the creolized chanson of New Orleans and the evergreen swing of an Artie Shaw tune to African grooves and Brazilian choro, samba and more. Cohen was joined in the studio by her ace working band - pianist Jason Lindner, double-bassist Joe Martin and drummer Daniel Freedman - as well as special guests: trombonist/vocalist Wycliffe Gordon, percussionist Gilmar Gomes and star clarinetist Paquito D'Rivera.

Claroscuro in Spanish describes the interplay of light and shade and it is an apt title for Clarinetist-Saxophonist extraordinaire Anat Cohen's sixth solo album. Her expressive virtuoso performances have become famous the world over on either instrument. The sounds coming from her horns, whether dark and sultry or lighthearted and swinging color the music like Monet's paints covered a canvas.

It's probably obvious by now that Anat is a favorite of mine. I've covered her now five or six times, either supporting other jazz masters or solo or with her brothers. There was Celebrando by Hendrik Meurkens, Gabriel Espinosa with Anat Cohen & Antonio Sanchez back in May, the in November of last year on the album with her siblings, 3 Cohen's "Family", and as part of Samba Jazz-Jazz Samba by the Duduka Da Fonseca Quintet in July, and on the album, Digging Me, Digging You by Amy Cervini, well, you get the idea. I'm infatuated with her music. However, to clarify just a bit, I don't have her poster pinned to the ceiling above my bed...yet.

This album covers the field from deliciously buoyant dances to darkly lyrical and sensually sexy ballads, with live-in-the-studio spontaneity a priority; moreover, Claroscuro showcases Cohen's fluency in a global set of styles, from the creolized chanson of New Orleans and the evergreen swing of an Artie Shaw tune to African grooves and Brazilian choro, samba and more.

Cohen was joined in the studio by her ace working band which includes pianist Jason Lindner, double-‐bassist Joe Martin and drummer Daniel Freedman - as well as special guests: trombonist/vocalist Wycliffe Gordon, percussionist Gilmar Gomes and star clarinetist Paquito D'Rivera.

5.0 out of 5 stars Masterpiece January 25, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Anat Cohen has produced a beautiful masterpiece. My anticipation was rewarded by as perfect an album that exists. The stunning cover photo expresses the title accurately. The music is devine. Cohen exhibits mastery on several instruments and she is accompanied on this aural journey by first rate musicians. This album should be in every jazz afficionado's collection.

Quite an interesting and exceptionally well-balanced selection of tunes, not a dud among them, with compelling performances from all the musicians involved. And the sound quality of this CD is also good. Clarinet is not all that common in jazz, so for anyone who likes clarinet and is into jazz, Anat Cohen is a must. On this CD, in addition to clarinet, she also plays some saxophone. The musicians in her quartet on piano, bass, and drums are all excellent, and there are three "guest" artists featured on selected tracks: Paquito D'Rivera also on clarinet (4 tracks), Wycliffe Gordon on trombone (2 tracks and he also sings on one track), and Gilmar Gomes on percussion (3 tracks). Claroscuro is my first exposure to Anat Cohen, but it sure won't be my last. I've only owned Claroscuro for a couple of weeks, and I've already ordered another one of her CDs. It won't surprise me if I end up buying the rest of them after that!

Beautiful and Soulful. I heard Anat Cohen interviewed by Terry Gross on NPR. I bought the disc. Now I listen to Claroscuro all the time, 'cause it puts me in such better mood than listening to NPR. Sequester? meteors? Tea party? who cares- I got Claroscuro.

4.0 out of 5 stars I love this January 12, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I don't write long reviews extolling the virtues or vices of particular CDs. I just know what I like, and what I don't.
I discovered Anat Cohen quite by accident(I don't exactly remember where). Suffice to say, I bought the first album on the basis of this brief listen.
I now own three. She is a brilliant, accomplished, and talented musician, and I love her playing.
Buy any of her Albums. You will not be disappointed.

Anat Cohen's albums are stunning, and what better title than Ciaroscuro to describe the light and shade dynamics she brings to each song.

Everything I've heard Anat Cohen do is interesting and first-rate This eclectic album shows her the range of her interests, and she surrounds herself with musicians with whom she apparently shares great affection for musical subtlety.
