If you were to take Mad Max, The Terminator, The Warriors and Lean On Me, and mix them in a blender, you'd get Class of 1999. It was directed by Mark Lester who made the excellent Class of 1984. This movie is sometimes considered a sequel to that film, but it isn't. Both movies have high schools and violent gangs, but that's where all comparisons end.

2.0 out of 5 stars Cheap, Plotless Garbage but Keeps You Watching
Class of 1999 is one of those movies that is so terrible you HAVE to watch until the end just to see how bad it can actually get. It takes place in, you guess it 1999. The film was made in 1990 when people thought 1999 would be like living on the moon. Gangbangers control the schools and the neighborhoods. That's when the reality buttons popped on for me. You have these...

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost Time For The Ten Year Reunion, September 27, 2008
This review is from: Class of 1999 (DVD)
If you were to take Mad Max, The Terminator, The Warriors and Lean On Me, and mix them in a blender, you'd get Class of 1999. It was directed by Mark Lester who made the excellent Class of 1984. This movie is sometimes considered a sequel to that film, but it isn't. Both movies have high schools and violent gangs, but that's where all comparisons end.
In the near future of 1999, violent street gangs have taken over, so bad that the police don't even bother with certain areas of the city(sounds like Death Wish 3!). The damn kids are still required to go to school though! A mullet and contact lens sporting Stacy Keach has taken military battle androids and given them new programs to act as teachers. Three of these androids are given a test run at the worst school in the city where Malcolm McDowell is principal. Meanwhile, ex-gangbanger, Cody, is released from prison and he's off to school. Renouncing his old gang ways, he quickly becomes the target for former gang members and old gang rivals. His brother, Angel, is now in the fold and snorting drugs(as well as his mother!), much to Cody's disappointment(sounds like American History X). Cody gets his groove on with the principal's daughter and tries to stay out of trouble, but he seems to be the only one noticing something odd about the three new teachers. At first they merely beat the snot out of the misbehaving punks, but soon their old military program starts to take over and then it's full out war on the students. Now Cody has to join his old gang and team up with his rival(who looks like Kevin Dubrow from Quiet Riot) to fight back against the android faculty.
Needless to say, this is a fun movie. Not quite as good as Class Of 1984(that movie kicks some serious butt!), but a good time nonetheless. Sure, the subject matter is obviously kinda silly, but the tone of the movie is rather grim and, serious and violent. It's an interesting turn to see the murderous thugs become the heroes of the film.
Aside from McDowell and Keach, we also have Pam Grier as one of the deadly teachers. Most of the cast is made up of actors straight from the "I've seen that guy in movies before, but I can't remember his name" school. The hero, Cody, is played by Bradley Gregg who you all may remember as "Eyeball" from Stand By Me. Or for the horror fans, the unlucky sleepwalker who gets turned into a living puppet by Freddy Krueger in Nightmare 3. His brother, Angel, is played by Joshua Miller, that annoying kid from the vampire bunch in Near Dark. John P Ryan, the father in Larry Cohen's It's Alive is one of the androids. The third android is stock villain Patrick Kilpatrick, who we all know and love as "The Sandman" from the VanDamme prison extravaganza, Death Warrant.
It all sounds like too much fun to even handle, doesn't it? Well, you can probably handle it, so give it a whirl. Of course if you had HBO years back, you've probably seen this numerous times.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Inside this school are three inhuman teaching monsters.", August 3, 2005
This review is from: Class of 1999 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Hell yea, CLASS OF 1999! In the future there's a high school were the students openly carry machine guns and shoot them off all the time. Girls raped, nerds knifed, cars armor plated its like "Saved by the Bell" meets THE ROAD WARRIOR.

The Department of Education Defense decides to use this school as an experiment so they send in three "reprogrammed" battle droids as teachers. You can already see where this is going. Now it's like "Saved by the Bell" meets THE TERMINATOR in ROAD WARRIOR world!

Bad hair, futuristic gang clothes, lots of drugs, non stop gunfire, psychotic amounts of screaming and yelling, a drill to the skull, explosions, over the knee spanking, flame thrower violence, car chase, motorcycle chase, an albino mullet, forklift death the only thing missing is mutants and rampant female nudity.

Truly a masterpiece of the low budget action genre, but what else would you expect from the director of COMMANDO! "Let off some steam, Bennett."

5.0 out of 5 stars This is one of my "ALL TIME" favorite movies, August 4, 2001

I loved this movie from the first time I watched it. It is innovative, action packed, mezmerizing, and interesting. I didn't want to miss a second of this movie. I love that it had futuristic angle about it. The setting was in a complete warzone, and there was non-stop action. I can't speak for anyone else but Bradley Gregg was definitely hott to me, and a fantastic actor. To cut this short, I loved all the shooting, the guns, the violence, and the bloodshed. This movie definitely gets a 10 from me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Class Of 1999, July 14, 2003

Mark L. Lester's 1989 sci-fi/action film about a futuristic high school where groups of gangs wearing some of the goofiest clothes imaginable run areas surrounding high schools. These areas known as "free fire zones" are run exclusively by the gangs. In Seattle, a principal of one of those schools hires a defense department operative to build "cyborg teachers" to maintain order in his classrooms.

One of the gangs is lead by Cody Culp (played by Bradley Gregg of "Stand By Me" fame), a freshly-paroled gangbanger hoping to go straight and stay out of trouble. The rival gang is lead by Hector (Jimmy Medina Tagert), a Hispanic thug looking to take out his agressions on Cody. This film features performances from such cult favorites as Pam Grier, Stacy Keach, Malcom McDowell, and Patrick Kilpatrick.

I first saw this movie on HBO when I was eleven-years-old and I really enjoyed it. It's really just an old-fashioned over-the-top science fiction movie. It doesn't exactly stand up to the test of time in some areas but it's still good for a few laughs and has some of the better special effects you will see from that era of movies.

A definite "guilty pleasure" by all means but still thoroughly entertaining. A film with a similar theme, THE FACULTY, was released in 1998. The movie is similar in theme though the teachers are aliens, this time, instead of cyborgs. Not half as good and way too commercial but I will admit that Josh Hartnett kicked [tail] in it (though he's no Bradley Gregg). If you've seen "Faculty", why not go and pick up this little cult film and see if you like it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Into science fiction? Try this one!, September 14, 2002

Ah, this is one of my favorite old movies. I caught this way back in 1990 or 1991. At that time the year 1999 (in the eyes of a fifteen-year-old) seemed to be a very distant future.

OK, so the year is 1999, and America's highschools have a tendency of turning into warzones. A possible solution to this problem is presented by highschool principal Langford, the Department of Educational Defense and a developer of killer-cyborgs, Megatech.

In Seattle, three new teachers are introduced in what little still remains of Kennedy High. Unknown to the students, their new teachers aren't even human. But when more and more students wind up dead it becomes clear that Megatech's cyborgs have grown out of control.

I love this movie! I have always enjoyed science fiction, and this movie delivers. It's got a bit of excellent action, provides some laughs and a spectacular final with some surprisingly good special effects! It's all got this sort of campy feel to it that I really enjoy in movies. And does anyone out there know the song "Come The Day - Class of 1999" by Midge Ure? It's at the end of the movie, and worth checking out as well!

4.0 out of 5 stars wonderful sci fi memories, September 21, 2008
This review is from: Class of 1999 (DVD)
This movie was great. I had the VHS version of this and used to catch it when it was on Cine max back in the early 90's. The story premise was the government were gonna use cyborgs to control a gang war zone ridden school. The cyborgs were teachers that look human (just like terminator)and eventually go crazy and start brutally killing some gang member students. This causes all out gore human vs. cyborg war. Not like a Troma movie at all. If you liked Chopping Mall and Terminator, this is not something you want to miss.

2.0 out of 5 stars Cheap, Plotless Garbage but Keeps You Watching, May 5, 2004
This review is from: Class of 1999 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Class of 1999 is one of those movies that is so terrible you HAVE to watch until the end just to see how bad it can actually get. It takes place in, you guess it 1999. The film was made in 1990 when people thought 1999 would be like living on the moon. Gangbangers control the schools and the neighborhoods. That's when the reality buttons popped on for me. You have these super tough gangmembers that carry guns everywhere yet they STILL go to school? Would they go to school? Also, the school is such a dangerous place that armed guards frisk the students and relieve them of their weapons every morning. I was like " Duh! ". The so-called gangmembers are so wimpy and wussy you'd think they were " Leave it to Beaver " rejects. That's just one of the many unrealistic points of this film. If you spent time trying to fit common sense into Class of 1999 you'll miss the entire film.

Bradley Gregg ( Stand By Me ) stars as Cody Culp. After a stint in prison he comes out with a changed attitude which his gang ( The Blackhearts ) don't appreciate. His little brother Angel is finding Cody's " gone-good " behavior sickening and it causes a little riff between the two. Meanwhile the principal ( Malcolm McDowell ) has hired Stacy Keach and his menacing teachers to clean up the terrible school. How can they? Well, the three new teachers ( Pam Grier and Patrick Kilpatrick included ) are nothing more than fururistic killing robots. Soon all order is lost as they slowly go on a rampage and make Cody their number one target. Along with the principal's daugher, Cody partakes in a mission to stop the evil robots ( are you laughing yet ) you should be. Anyway, all heck breaks loose by the end of the film when The Blackhearts team up with their rival gang to stop the robots. The film goes from a wannabe " Lean on Me " to " Terminator " in less than an hour. If you get lost don't worry because the plot is to blame. If you like Sci-Fi I guess you can squeeze this into your regime. If you can't tolerate silliness at all then don't bother to watch this. But if you're an all around movie lover like me who just likes to watch films at least once...go right ahead. But don't be surprised when you feel like a train's run over your sanity by the end. Enjoy.

If you don't know about this movie I would advise you to run to the store and buy this movie right away. Class of 1999 is a B- Movie tour de force starring Bradley Gregg and Traci Lind with strong support from Malcolm Mc Dowell, Pam Grier, and Stacey Keach (in a sinster role as head of Megatech)The plot is rather simple, The large cities have been taken over by gangs and for the schools to re-open, Malcolm Mc Dowell (the principal) makes a Faustian Bargain with Stacy Keach of 'Megatech'to bring three Androids to keep teach the hard cases. Little does Mc Dowell know that these "Battle Droids" are not only teaching but committing murders, war games on two of the rivial gangs led by Gregg who falls in love with the "principal's daughter" Lind. They find out that Keach wanted Pam Grier (who could teach me anytime) Patrick Kilpatrick to wage war on campus. Like many classic 80's B- Movies, the effects are chessy, and Seatle looks too much like a battleground. But Love this movie and it keeps your attention for 90 minutes.

This movie is very interesting. It is very violent. I surprizingly enjoyed this movie, but I did feel a bit affended by the way the director thought of tennagers. He displayed thim as evil hell raisers that needed to be killed. But it was preety cool when Pam Grier rips of her human skin at the end.
