From Booklist

Sepia Davis is a very successful romance writer, although she was already familiar with the good life. Her parents and her friends make up the wealthy upper crust of suburban Cromwell near Washington, D.C. Sepia would like to change gears and write detective stories revolving around a new female cop character, so she arranges to ride along with a policewoman. When she gets to the station in Crawford, Cromwell's polar opposite, however, she finds not a cooperative policewoman, but rather surly Officer Paul Healy, who is in no mood for this spoiled princess. But shots are fired, Sepia sees the killer running away, and Paul now has to guard Sepia and solve the crime. Paul discovers that Sepia isn't a total snob, and Sepia learns that there's much to admire in this working-class cop. As the list of murder victims grows, so do their feelings for each other in this contemporary twist on a classic theme of love versus social status. Maria Hatton

Sepia Davis is a wealthy woman and has worked hard to maintain a level head, but officer Paul Healy doesn't think so. Paul believes Sepia is a snob and just out seeking adventure when she goes on a ride along with him, but when Sepia is in danger because of something she witnessed Paul runs to her rescue and is determined to protect her at all cost.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's a thin line, July 2, 2004
By
The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers (RAWSISTAZ.com and BlackBookReviews.net) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Class Apart (Arabesque) (Mass Market Paperback)
A CLASS APART is a clash of two very different individuals over
lifestyles, views, and emotions. Police officer Paul Healy, from the
working class city of Crawford is focused on becoming a homicide
detective. Sepia Davis, from the more affluent neighboring city of
Compton, was born with the proverbial silver spoon, and for the most
part is a socialite. Sepia is a also an award winning Romance writer,
but is currently writing a mystery which requires assistance from the
local police department.

Paul is the officer assigned to assist Sepia in her research, and from
their initial meeting things do not bode well. Paul's ex-wife left him
and has since remarried someone in Compton who is more class-worthy.
This is one of the reasons Paul's resentment for Sepia and what she
represents is high. But, this attitude could jeopardize all he has
worked to achieve. Sepia is a witness in a high profile killing, her
safety, to Paul's dismay, becomes another part of his assignment and
it increases the tension between them. But this added tension has
nothing to do with his assignment or her book. When Sepia's life is
threatened Paul finally admits there is something about this woman that
calls to him in the most elemental way; but will he lower his
resentment and listen?

Angela Winters has given readers a wonderful who-dun-it, surrounded by
issues which emphasize the pitfalls of stereotyping and show that love
is not classified. Because of the subtle way she presents her lessons
in humanity, this is more than just a quick, entertaining read.
