The MYTH series is back to its roots,
This review is from: Class Dis-Mythed (Myth Adventures) (Paperback)
From the old school cover art (from Phil Foglio) to the return of the old school MYTH series style... The MYTH Series is back!
I must admit, I wasn't expecting much from this recient MYTH book given how I believe the last few didn't measure up to the origional 10 books of the series. This will showed me how nice it is to be wrong. I have been a fan of the MYTH series since "Another Fine MYTH". So please believe me when I say that if you liked the earlier MYTH books you will like Class Dis-MYTHed. If you have shied away from the MYTH series because the most recient examples have not measured up, be ready for a plesent supprise. My only critisisim is that there isn't enough Aahz (but I guess if Skeeve is now the teacher we have to keep Aahz to a minimum). However, I will say that Skeeve is starting to take on more and more of Aahz's traits. On a similar note, I did like how Skeeve's students have filled his old role of "mistake making apprentices". The apprarences off old favoriates from previous books was also a great addition. If you like the old MYTH series, grab Class Dis-MYTHed. If you like the Xanth series by Piers Anthony, grab Class Dis-MYTHed. If you like to laugh, grab Class Dis-MYTHed. If you know what is good for you (as Don Bruce says), grab Class Dis-MYTHed.

I know the last three books in the myth series have taken some heat from loyal readers. I would agree that there was a learning curve - the first two books of RLA and JLN's colaboration were decent, but certainly not up to the standard RLA set in the earlier books. But I have very much enjoyed both Myth-Alliances and the current Class Dis-Mythed.
In the latest title, I was pleased to see some of the old style of humor show through (though not quite as often as I would have liked). I also liked seeing Skeeve 'come into his own', but also showing that, in many ways (some more obvious than others), he was becoming very much like Aahz. The biggest reason I only gave 3 stars (it would have been 3 and a half if that were an option), was because of the ending. I'm certainly not going to give anything away, but I will say that the stroyline, action, and humor all had me captivated and eager to see the conclusion. And it wasn't so much the conclusion of the matter that left me flat as much as the final confrontation. I was reading and thinking, "What are they going to do? How are they going to overcome whatever huge obstacle is going to confront them?" But when I read the final 'battle' I was left thinking, "Is that it?" It almost felt to me like a copout. But, that said, I will still recommend that anyone who is a fan of the series definitely read this latest offering. Dispite my criticisms, it still lives up to the expectations set in the first ten books.

Better than expected,

The book is much more like the old ones, and I found it to be very nice, albeit fast, reading. The book is stretched out by way of font size and spacing (were normally formatted it would probably be 30% thinner). It was short reading. The book, for me, was not very funny, but just a nice little myth style adventure. It certainly is not as funny as a Terry Pratchett book. I gave it 4 stars for several reasons, but my biggest gripe is the cost of the book for what really is a couple of hours of reading, and I am not a very fast reader. Still, if you are a fan of the series you will enjoy this book. I also wish that Aahz played a bigger role. I don't want to give too much away, but there is a little bit of a twist that makes for nice reading, but some of it was just a little too simple and too easy. You will see what I mean when you read the book. Those were the reasons for my 4 stars.

Mr Asprin? Where are you?!?!,
This review is from: Class Dis-Mythed (Myth Adventures) (Paperback)
When I read this book, I was disappointed from the get go. The earlier style of humor and character interaction is just not there anymore. Almost to the point that I feel Jodi Lynn Nye seems to have done all the writing and Mr. Asprin just has his name on the cover. Either that or Aprin's style has changed dramatically since the earlier books in this series. About the only positive thing I can say about this book is they have Phil Foglio back doing the artwork so it at least LOOKS like a Myth book again (which is the only reason I gave it two stars). Too bad the stories just do not go anywhere anymore and entertain us like they used to.

I thought this Myth book was OK. Honestly, I'm a bit disappointed with the books on which there is a co-author. I feel like I can really tell a difference. The ending was a bit anti-climactic for this one. If you just want to escape and not think, this book is decent, but I think my time with the MYTH books has come to an end.

If you like the series, you'll love this one. It gets back to the roots of what made Skeeve such a lovable character and the humor/wit in this book is back on top! One of the best of the Myth series.
