From the Publisher

The outrageously funny picture books series from Mike Thaler and Jared Lee are now chapter books! Follow Hubie on his adventures in the Black Lagoon, where how rumors can make a student create a monster of any teacher! These stories are sure to amuse and quell fears of new experiences at the same time!

About the Author

Mike Thaler was born in Los Angeles in 1936. After moving to New York City, he started his professional career drawing cartoons for adults in 1960. A children's book editor saw one of these cartoons and encouraged Mike to write for children. Since then, Mike has written over 140 children’s books and has become known as America’s “Riddle King.” Mike says that writing and riddles are a powerful way to stimulate a child’s interest in learning and creating. He is an award-winning author and illustrator and has been called “one of the most creative people in children’s literature.” Mike currently lives in Canby, Oregon.

Jared Lee has illustrated more than 100 books for young readers. He has received awards from the Society of Illustrators, the Martha Kinney Cooper Ohioana Library Association, the National Cartoonists Society, and others. He lives in Ohio with his wife and a menagerie of dogs, cats, ponies, ducks, and a few unknown creatures.

This is one of the rare books he will let me read to him and we can discuss what the jokes are about and get the word play.

I find it a good challenging book for kids.

We've struggled a bit with comprehension, and I'm always looking for books at the right reading level for my competent, but reluctant, almost-8 y/o reader. The words and concepts in these are fine for a 6/7/8 year old, but some of the phrasing and the jokes seem to be difficult for an early-chapter-book-reader to grasp without some discussion to go along (we ask questions on about every other page to make sure he "gets" it). There are lots of plays on words, which are funny, but sometimes require more explanation than just context. I was hoping for something he could read independently, and once he gets used to the humor, maybe he can. Cute stories though, topics generally suitable and interesting for this age-group, I would say more boy-oriented than girl, though my daughter will listen to them too (6 y/o).

I think that this book is great for kids my age! When you read this book I think it will blow you away. My favorite character is Herb. He is the main character. Herb is my favorite because he is very funny and has a huge imagination. This book is about a kid named Herb and how he is imagining what his class trip will be like. You have to read this book to find out what the mystery is about. I liked the book because there is a lot of action and funny stuff. If you like monsters and aliens, you will like The Class Trip from the Black Lagoon.

I agree with the comments from the 3-star review but I really like these books. My son just turned 6 and his reading level is way above his age. Normally, he does not like to be read to because he reads much faster independently. This is one of the rare books he will let me read to him and we can discuss what the jokes are about and get the word play.

This book is okay, but it jumps around inside one kid's imagination. My son has been recently diagnosed with ADD and chose this to read for a book report. I think it was just to all over the place for him to really grasp all the concepts. Even when tested on the book he only did average and couldn't recall all the details he needed to.

On a positive note, it does show the creative and imaginative mind a child can have. That's about all I can say...not a fan.
