Excellent for those who know Indian cooking techniques!,
This review is from: The Classic 1000 Indian Recipes (Paperback)
This cookbook is ideal for those who've watched their Indian mothers prepare meals but need some help in determining "exact measurements". The book does not describe technique very well, but after having seen my mother fix meals hundreds of times, I didn't need much instruction in technique. I needed help in ingredients and amounts. I modify the recipes in the book a little to more closely mimic my mother's cooking and have learned some new things along the way. I've found that many of the foods I grew up with in the cookbook turn out very well!
The index is a little difficult to sort through since various Indian foods have different names. Be patient!

I love this book for the sheer quantity of recipes that it contains. I was a bit apprehensive about buying it at first because I am a vegetarian and it has shrimp on the front cover. Not surprisingly, however, it has a ton of vegetarian recipes. I think it's a great buy.Note: As previously mentioned, it does not have a lot of information for the inexperienced cook.

I own several Indian Cookbooks but I couldn't resist this one. What the other books don't cover in recipes - this one will! Pretty simple to use - some pics throughout. (can't expect 1000 pics in a book). I've tried 5 or 6 recipes now and it's the one I turn to first when I want to try a new dish. So far, everything I've made turned out good!

I tried three classic Indian recipes off if this book and none of them tasted "great." Of course, it was good but I didn't think it was great. They do recommend adjusting amount on some of the ingredients to your taste, but it is extremely hard to do when you are using over 10 spices. I was just a little disappointed in the results.

Great buy!,
This review is from: The Classic 1000 Indian Recipes (Paperback)
Great recipes - we have yet to be disappointed! The other reviews stating that this is not a beginners book are correct, the explanations for some basic techniques in Indian cooking are left out. They assume you already know some things however, I AM a beginner with Indian cooking (and I'm not Indian so no tips from Mom here either) and have found many recipes that I was able to make without any difficulty. If you want a picture-book, this also isn't a book for you, this cookbook get right to the meat of things - recipes printed on paper. My only gripe about the book is that yes, there may be 1000 recipes in the book but some are repeats. Like...you can find a chicken curry in the chicken section and a lamb curry in the lamb section that are basically the same in every way except for the protein choice. The variety of recipe's though are excellent otherwise and as I become more proficient with technique learning from other sources and trial and error, I'm sure more of this book will come even more into use.

If you follow the recipe's quantities of spices, the food turns out fairly bland. Also, 1000 should be divided by five since many recipes are repeats with prawns, chicken, vegetables, fish, and beef.
