Good Belafonte collection....with a fatal flaw.,

This is a good collection of five(5) early Belafonte albums originally released on RCA Victor in the 1950's. It contains MARK TWAIN & OTHER FOLK FAVORITES, BELAFONTE, CALYPSO, AN EVENING WITH BELAFONTE, & BELAFONTE SINGS OF THE CARIBBEAN.
These albums are out of copyright in Europe, that is why this is not a BMG/Sony release. The sound quality is quite good and I don't think that anyone listening will be dissapointed. Only one fatal flaw, on the album AN EVENING WITH..., the song ONCE WAS(track 2 on orig. album) is NOT included in this package. It's a shame and again a fatal flaw to an otherwise good collection of early Belafonte music. No original album covers are included, but some credits (songwriters, etc.) are included. The song ONCE WAS can be found on the 3-CD box set released by RCA in the mid to late 1990's. Overall, good collection, great price. And for those of you who want the missed song, it's almost a great collection. That's my-2-cents. Enjoy the music.

If the sound of the Caribe is what matters, you will certainly like this. It wouldn't hurt if you remember the times when originally released.

This may not be quite the best deal from Belafonte, but I am happy with it because it has most of his hits and one song I dearly wanted. It is called "Love, love alone" and it is a charming, slightly ironic song about the marriage of King Edward and mrs Simpson. You can hear that 100 times and you would still be smiling. Belafonte details this song with his profound intelligence of nuances. The CD gives as author J. Hardy, but Jamaica claims it as being from Lord Caresser (Rufus Callender). Nobody in Europe could have written this song: "On the 10th of December 1936/ The duke of Windsor went to get his kicks / It was love, love, love, love, love alone / Caused King Edward to leave his throne".
