Format: Audio CD
This 4-CD package would be a bargain if it included a Stitt masterpiece like "New York Jazz" New York Jazz (Dig) or an earthshaking battle of giants, like "Sonny Side Up" Sonny Side Up. If you're new to Sonny, suffice it to say that he was no Bird--nor was there ever any need to make comparisons. Stitt, the notorious "Lone Wolf" of jazz, was once quoted as saying his hero was "Art Tatum, because you can't get no better than that!" Well said, and indisputable, the point being that Sonny did not see any need to be an innovator, a pioneer, a free player. He had as tight a relation with the Great American Songbook as Crosby, Sinatra and Ella, and when he was at his best he sounded like the Art Tatum of the tenor or alto saxophone, recording 3-minute performances of familiar standards that simply could not be improved upon. The full-throated open sound, the tonal shadings, the dynamics, the breath support, the lightening-fast but varied articulations, the command of all three saxophones (he was a monster on baritone as well)--when all of these skills met up with his love of form, perfection and "closure," the results were scintillating, brilliant improvisations executed with unforced precision. Everything that Stitt did was at once logical and expressive, making him the "most perfect" of all saxophonists and the most exemplary, the musician who can be recommended as any beginning player's best teacher.Read more ›

If you like jazz saxophone, you'll probably love this. Four albums combined on two CDs of some really tasty and vintage Sonny Stitt. Enjoy!
