4.0 out of 5 stars Who compiles these sets? December 3, 2012
By Brian
Mismatched quartet of late-'50s/early-'60s camp horror makes up this handsome 20th Century Fox box set. Movies range in description from classic to just plain strange, though all are worth watching at least once. They include:

'The Alligator People' (1959) - Science-gone-haywire genre picture has a low-budget, Saturday matinee feel to it but manages to conjure some smoldering, Southern Gothic chills despite its fairly ludicrous-- though at times fun and effective-- premise. Sharp b&w photography and clean widescreen presentation help earn TAP 3-minus stars. With Lon Chaney Jr.

'The Cabinet of Caligari' (1962) - Only tenuously affiliated with the German-expressionist masterpiece of similar title, this bizarre and mostly understimulating mind-bender is just off-kilter enough to keep you engaged (especially if you're more into cinematography than psychology). Taken from a very nice b&w widescreen print. 2-plus stars.

'The Fly' (1958) - Wonderful entomological take on the 'Frankenstein' myth is hands-down the highlight of the set. Quintessential 1950s sci-fi/horror-- in Technicolor, no less-- is so efficiently stitched together it's easy to overlook how silly the whole thing is. 4 stars. With Vincent Price.

'House of the Damned' (1963) - Somewhat tepid house-trap-o-horrors is actually compelling at moments if you give it a chance. Sort of Browning's 'Freaks' meets Castle's 'House on Haunted Hill,' sixties style. Again, solid b&w widescreen transfer. 2 1/2 stars.

Although the combined content itself lands somewhere in 3-star territory, the first-rate four-disc packaging (Amazon's specs incorrectly state one disc) and bargain price raise the ante a half-point or more.

Some of the less know titles in a nice economic package. The quality of the transfers and sound is excellent. It is an excellent value.
