Book Description

Classic American Railroads October 2003
This book picks up where the previous two Classic American titles left off, celebrating 12 more of the greatest American railways to ever put steel to track: the Atlantic Coast Line, Norfolk & Western, Soo Line, Lackawanna, Monon, Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range, Frisco, Maine Central, Canadian National, Clinchfield, Reading, and the Spokane, Portland & Seattle. While the book focuses on the golden age of American railroading from 1945 to the early 1970s, it extends to the present day where applicable, providing a colorful look at locomotives, passenger and freight operations, development, and, in some cases, demise. Marvelous color spreads for each railroad are illustrated with wonderfully preserved photos that capture these legendary roads as they roll past scenic backdrops.

“Schafer has managed to both inform and delight even the most knowledgeable railroad buff.”

About the Author

Mike Schafer hails from Rockford, Illinois, where he recalls his earliest train-watching experiences on the Illinois Central, Milwaukee Road, Burlington Route, and Chicago & North Western. He vividly can recall his first train rides, circa 1952, on IC’s Hawkeye and Land O’ Corn between Rockford and Chicago. Eventually he would declare the latter — America’s railroad hub — his “honorary hometown. Mike and his little dog Archie reside in a house (which includes a 1,600-square-foot model railroad) next to BNSF’s busy Twin Cities mainline in a small town outside Chicago where he also serves as village trustee and occasionally mayor pro tem.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Value and a Good Read, March 27, 2007

Being sofa bound for a week this was a sanity saver. It inevitably is not an in depth history of each railroad but as a large collection of colour images of American railroading with good background information its a steal. The box set even more so compared with buying the individual books.

5.0 out of 5 stars GOOD SOLID INTRODUCTION, December 24, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
An elementary introduction to many of the most famous lines in the United States. For the beginner or for an old hand who wants a quick reference to some major point. Not for basic, thorough reference. Nice pics for modeling.

This book displays all the old classics that I as a child remember my grandfather working with at the railroad depot in my hometown.
