A Compilation of the Past Images of our National Pastime, October 5, 2008
This review is from: Classic Baseball Photographs, 1869-1947 (Hardcover)
Donald Honig has compiled the art and texture of the infancy of professional baseball and forward to its adolescence and onto its adulthood.
What Honig has done is to compile pictures that are indeed representative of each period. Many of these images are haunting. You see the hard faces of young men who if they didn't play the game surely would be doing hard manual labor.
The image of the photograph of the 1907 New York Highlanders at Hot Springs, Arkansas during Spring Training conjures images of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
The pictures of Christy Mathewson, Cy Young, Tris Speaker, Smokey Joe Wood and Napoleon Lojoie are priceless.
Later the images of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Ted Williams, Bob Feller and Joe DiMaggio grace the pages.
Mr. Honig just does not show these classic images, he sets in prose a great narrative in explaining who these players were.
I am a baseball fan. This photographic narrative from 1869 to 1947 is indeed a classic. I recommend this work to all serious baseball fans. Five Stars, no problem!!!
