5.0 out of 5 stars Justin is in "classic" form in this radical musical departure...
An album of virtually doing the unthinkable, Moody Blues frontman Justin Hayward, with the help of producer Mike Batt records a very daring album of pop classics with a full orchestra for instrumental backing. Can you imagine Led Zeppelin's "Stairway To Heaven" being sung by Justin with a full orchestra?? Well, quite frankly, I couldn't either when picking up this album...

3.0 out of 5 stars Valiant effort at an album of remakes
It was very interesting to see how Justin would weave his way through other people's material. Macarthur Park, Vincent, God Only Knows, and Scarborough Fair were successful. Stairway To Heaven and Whiter Shade Of Pale became too dirge-like. Tracks Of My Tears has already been remade by too many artists. Forever Autumn was good, but I like the Moodies' version better...

5.0 out of 5 stars Justin is in "classic" form in this radical musical departure..., March 5, 2006
This review is from: Classic Blue (Audio CD)
An album of virtually doing the unthinkable, Moody Blues frontman Justin Hayward, with the help of producer Mike Batt records a very daring album of pop classics with a full orchestra for instrumental backing. Can you imagine Led Zeppelin's "Stairway To Heaven" being sung by Justin with a full orchestra?? Well, quite frankly, I couldn't either when picking up this album when it was first released. So the question must be asked if this type of recording is even remotely effective in its scope. If one is a die-hard Moody Blues fan, the answer is definitely "yes". However, this album might appeal more to someone who prefers classical music than one who considers themselves a moderate Moody Blues/Justin Hayward fan.

Also included in this set is a slower, stirring rendition of Hayward's solo single "Forever Autumn" (from Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of "The War Of The Worlds"), plus other pop classics like Richard Harris' "MacArthur Park", and Procol Harum's "A White Shade of Pale" just to name a few all done in the previously mentioned musical style.

Although not all that easy to locate, this album is a wonderful departure from Hayward's usual music style. Fortunately, his incredible voice is in top form here, although he didn't attempt to hit that last high note on "MacArthur Park" (would you if you were singing it??). But overall, this album is VERY GOOD, and highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic songs interpreted by a classic rocker --with class, February 10, 1999
By
Madalena M. Carrozzo (Brooklyn, New York USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Classic Blue (Audio CD)
This is a beautiful collection and selection of songs by the voice of the Moody Blues who delivers interpretations in his own signature style. Call it a vanity album if you choose; this is clearly a showcase for his voice. His plaintive vocals are crystal clear and immaculate throughout, with many a number sending a shiver up the spine as only an emotional Justin Hayward vocal can. I especially enjoyed his version of "MacArthur Park" (a 60's throwback which I've always liked and found fascinating). JH's rendition, I feel, surpasses the original. I played Justin's for my mother (for whom I'd bought Richard Harris' album with my allowance as a child) and she liked Justin's rendition better (a true compliment, if you ask me!). The orchestral version of his worldwide hit, "Forever Autumn" is stunning and just as heart-rending as its counterpart. Simon & Garfunkel's "Scarborough Fair" is also an outstanding cut. Not many artists would dare try to cover "Stairway to Heaven" or "A Whiter Shade of Pale" and Justin does these classic mainstays of rock radio justice. He also does "Man of the World" by original Fleetwood Mac member, Peter Green, and as a Beatles' fan, "Blackbird" was a happy addition for me. Now, if only Justin would do "Classic Blue, Part II" and perhaps try "If You Could Read My Mind" and "The Last Time I Saw Her" both by Gordon Lightfoot (my other favorite artist and one who, I understand, Mr.Hayward is also a fan of); "Aubrey" by Bread; and perhaps, the Beatles "She's Leaving Home", there would be the start of a second gem of a classic album. Talk about emotional vocals. What do you say, Justin? Your fans would relish another compliation in this genre. It's such a departure for the frontman of a seminal band of the'60's that is still filling the venues today. It would be another stage for this multi-talented musician to explore.

5.0 out of 5 stars One word: BEAUTIFUL!, September 23, 1999
By
This review is from: Classic Blue (Audio CD)
Even though Mr. Hayward did not write one these songs (and he's written a few classics) it is one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard from him. There are so many more songs I'd love to hear him sing, but the song list is good and shows what a voice the man has. "Scarborough Fair", "Vincent" and my favorite, "Bright Eyes" done so well by Art Garfunkel originally, Justin breezes through these songs as if they were written just for him. The only one I would've left off is "Stairway to Heaven". Seems an odd one throw in there, but the rest are truly as the title says, "Classic". This is a MUST for any Justin Hayward or Moody Blues fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning!, March 19, 2000
This review is from: Classic Blue (Audio CD)
I purchased this album with an open mind and I think that is the key to why I enjoy it so much. I must admit I was hesitant about MacArthur Park because I have always despised that song. But I did not try to compare these versions to the originals. I took it for what it was: simply an opportunity for Justin to show off his voice. It is in no way an attempt to "better" the original versions of these songs (although he sometimes succeeds at just that - I LOVE MacArthur Park! ). All the songs on this album are tastefully done, but to me, "Vincent" is profoundly stunning. It leaves me speechless each time I hear it. The orchestral arrangements are beautiful and, as usual, Justin's voice is clear and haunting; altogether flawless. This album works, and if you are a fan of the Moody Blues or Justin, by all means, give it a chance.

4.0 out of 5 stars One Moody, 13 tracks, superlative results!, July 12, 2007
This review is from: Classic Blue (Audio CD)
As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various music supplies and recordings from the 60's and 70's.

Justin Hayward's brilliant 1994 album "Classic Blue" has thirteen cover tunes from songs that had garnered his attention over the years. With the help of Mike Batt and the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Hayward takes us on a musical odyssey that is magnificent. It would not be poetic license to put this at the top of any Moody Blues solo project.

Justin's voice is in terrific form. What will impress any Moody Blues fan is how he was willing to take on such diverse tracks from the Beatles to Led Zeppelin and the superlative fashion of his vocal representations.

The difference between a musical genius and a critic with an agenda is the musician knows that there is nothing uncool admitting a performer outside your forte is impressive. Robbie Robertson from the Band had no problem with Neil Diamond partaking in the "Last Waltz" and Justin didn't think twice of covering the Richard Harris mega hit "MacArthur Park."

Opening with the Miracles worldwide smash "Tracks Of My Tears", Hayward immediately impresses the listener by going outside the progressive rock comfort zone for his version of the rhythm and blues classic. "MacArthur Park" (All seven minutes) is stunning for the arrangement and complexity. Hayward pays homage to the Beatles (Lennon & McCartney) with a wonderful vocal on "Blackbird." Don McLean's "Vincent" is powerful enough to stop time. He has taken the song to a greater level. The production on the Beach Boys "God Only Knows" is flawless. There are no imperfections as Justin holds our attention during every note. "A Whiter Shade Of Pale" (Procol Harum) is delivered with such precision it is scary that one singer can excel on so many levels. Simon & Garfunkel are known for the timeless version of "Scarborough Fair." Hayward proudly unveils his tremendous rendition. "Forever Autumn" is recognizable from "War Of The Worlds." We are offered another opportunity to hear the song with spectacular results. As the journey reaches the end one of the most famous songs ever penned "Stairway To Heaven" (Led Zeppelin) leaves us shaking our heads with amazement. One voice, thirteen songs, and endless accolades, thank you Justin.

Enjoy the music and be well,

5.0 out of 5 stars A Showcase Of Talent!, November 7, 2002
This review is from: Classic Blue (Audio CD)
Justin Hayward has never seemed able to stop recording - he loves music that much. This unusual collaboration between the Moody Blues arguably best singer and pop composer Mike Batt is extraordinary. Taking some of the best big hits of the sixties and seventies, this duo have recrafted some well-loved (and well-covered) standards.

Who would have dared to take Led Zeppelin's huge hit, "Stairway To Heaven" and turn it into "classical" mode? It's an astounding success. "MacArthur Park" seems to fit the format more likely, but even this version seems to rival the original Richard Harris masterpiece! "Vincent" is sung with an entirely new feeling that surpasses Don McLean's version and "A Whiter Shade Of Pale" stoutly stands out - Procol Harem should be proud.

This album is meticuosly produced and the arrangements are just a bit more than great. Haywards vocals are more distinct and pronounced than on many Moody Blues albums and it is a thrill to finally hear the lyrics clearly, instead of guessing all these years. This is a rare and classic album indeed.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic twist on some classic songs!, December 29, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Classic Blue (Audio CD)
In this album, Justin Hayward (lead singer for the Moody Blues) performs classic rock hits with the help of an incredible orchestral backdrop. A couple of the songs don't quite click, but most do, particularly "Vincent", "MacArthur Park", "A Whiter Shade of Pale", and "Scarborough Fair". And "Stairway to Heaven" with no guitars or drums? Hey, you wouldn't think so, but it works. Worth a look, especially if you are a Justin Hayward fan!

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply a Classic...the BEST, May 10, 1999
This review is from: Classic Blue (Audio CD)
This is one of Justin's very very best solo albums. The Mike Batt orchestral arrangements and Justin's vocals on such classic songs works like pure magic. Anyone who is not incredibly moved by the full choir sound and orchestral thunder of "Stairway to Heaven" should seek medical help. This is a great album...not to be missed by Moody Blues fans or just fans of music all together.
