Editorial Reviews

Few genres carry such a rich and deep history as Celtic music, which reflects centuries of culture of Ireland and the British Isles, as well as their North American inheritors. Music historian, musician, and folklorist Richard Carlin delves into this diverse world of traditional music, compiling a wide spectrum of 23 tracks that contrast the better-known early recordings with some of the best contemporary interpreters. Styles ranging from Sligo fiddle tunes to sean nós singing are represented in this enjoyable introduction to the Celtic music riches of the Smithsonian Folkways archives.

5.0 out of 5 stars from the authentic roots March 17, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
In his introductory remarks compiler Richard Carlin acknowledges the dubiousness of "Celtic music" as anything like a truly meaningful category in any other than a marketing sense. What he puts into this collection is (mostly) Irish and Scottish music from Smithsonian Folkways' extraordinarily deep catalog of the world's folk music.

Not to be confused with the glossy pop of Enya and the like, this recording focuses on the music in its authentic form, played or sung -- there isn't much overlap -- by traditional artists (Willie Clancy, Harry Cox) and tradition-minded revivalists (Shirley Collins, Patrick Clancy). It's 23 cuts and an hour's worth of lovingly performed, gripping rural ballads alongside fiddle and pipe tunes, many from field recordings. My only complaint is that there's less than one minute of the exquisite Sarah Makem (Tommy's mother), on a fragment of "As I Roved Out." Sarah Makem recordings are available elsewhere, of course, and happily this, the latest in Smithsonian Folkways' Classic series, has plenty else to engage the serious listener. Not to be missed.

Even with an extensive collection of "Celtic" music I found this to be a great addition. I really enjoy the Smithsonian Folkways selections.

1.0 out of 5 stars Yes it is, but! March 6, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
For the music purist, this recording would probably be a great purchase.
It harkens back to the music recorded in the mountains of eastern Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia. It is a genuine article but for anyone who has
feasted on Enya , Lorena McKennit, Altan, et al. it will be a real disappointment.
The vocals are more like chants, the instrumentals are very lonely with seldom more than one instrument playing. Good luck. Jim Strong
