1.0 out of 5 stars Classic Christianity by Bob George
(This should have appeared with a 5-star rating) A must for everyone who believes they are "born again," and for anyone who is not a "believer" and is seeking to understand true Christianity. Guaranteed to awaken the reader to basic truths that are more often than not overlooked (if not avoided or totally misunderstood to begin with) by much, if not most of the...

I have been a Christian for 15 years and my faith has been a heavy burden for me for so long and I never understood why. Peace and joy were only words to me. I assumed that I just had not yet achieved "authentic Christianity" and that I had to work to achieve that level before I could know those things that God promises. Boy, was I off base. Bob George's book literally changed my life (and I don't use that phrase liberally or lightly). It showed me the true gospel message that I had been missing for so long. For the first time in my depressed life, God lifted the blackness and I knew what peace and rest meant. I now know more about what salvation REALLY means: true life on earth not just biding our time until we get to heaven. The Lord meets you where you are. Thank God for that AND for Bob George's book. A must read for anyone looking for rest in their faith.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb!, June 18, 2003
By
This title is the second one I have read by Bob George. After reading "Faith that Pleases God" and being disappointed, I wanted to read his best-selling work. Now I understand why so many people have shown interest in this particular author.

George addresses a problem that is all too prevalent in Christian circles today: legalism. Far too many people have found salvation through faith in Christ alone, only to be enslaved by a long list of religious duties and spiritual obligations. George brings his readers back to the Scriptural basics here. He repeatedly makes the point that God saves us and KEEPS us saved through grace alone.

I recommend this book highly to all Christians, especially those believers from conservative or fundamentalist backgrounds. George proclaims God's Biblical truth about salvation and sanctification. In doing so, he sets his readers free.

5.0 out of 5 stars A step out of doing and a step into being, August 28, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Classic Christianity (Paperback)
Bob George has explained the true essence of the Gospel in such a way that you'll wonder how you ever missed it in the first place. The words of the Bible have not changed, but after reading Classic Christianity, the way you see those words will. Through wonderfully relevent analogies and the author's own true-to-life stories, you will come to an understanding of how much the Christian life is identity, not behavior -- being, not doing.

Though having grown up in the church, I turned away from God as I entered college. Before I graduated, however, I came back to Him because of the Gospel message as taught to me by Bob George. That was five years ago and I'm still plugging along with the full realization that His grace means everything. I've read Classic Christianity countless times in the 5 years since first picking it up and it never gets old, it only gets better. This book is rarely on my bookshelf, though. I seem to keep giving it away.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book changed my LIFE, forever., February 23, 2005
By
Krista (Austin, Texas) - See all my reviews
I became a Christian while in college, 24 years ago. In spite of my "selling out" to the Lord, attending seminary, and marrying a pastor (who got out of the ministry, a decade ago), I have had an insurmountable battle with guilt, because of one specific sin in my past. Even though I appeared, to everyone who knew me, to be a bubbly, fun, happy person, my emotional baggage was heavy...An old college friend and I hooked up, 20 years after having last seen one another, and he gave me the book, thinking it might be key to my inability to let go of this one sin. This book, single-handedly, did what neither my husband, nor time spent praying, or ANYTHING else I've tried, for two decades, could do - it set me free, and I am at peace - TRULY at peace - for the first time in my life. My walk with the Lord is finally not built on trying to do the right thing, but on resting in the hammock of His love for me - a concept I understood but could not apply to mySELF. If you are frustrated with anything in your past or present, this is THE book for you...I also liked that the author wasn't a Christian, until the age of 36 - sort of "my type" of Christian. Regardless of where you are, this is the most awesome book you will EVER read. It is also the ONLY book I have EVER read which was, simultaneously, intellectually-stimulating AND and easy-read. Phenomenal. I am reading it for the second time, immediately after having finished it, and I have bought 15 copies, to give to friends I have who struggle with various things which are difficult to let go of. Two friends who are reading it right now are NOT Christians, and both have said, "I want this...this is what I've looked for, all my life...I want what you have." If you buy this book, and want to talk to someone about it, make your subject line clear (or I won't open your email), and I would love to discuss it with you! I am talking to three different friends, right now, who are reading it. All say exactly what I have, about it. Please buy this book - you will NEVER be the same...never, never, never. My husband cannot BELIEVE how different I am, overnight...this book will do for you what no other can - at least, in my experience. krista1230@yahoo.com

5.0 out of 5 stars What a Christian Book Should Do, September 26, 2002
By
Christopher Jason Cuppett (Alexandria, VA United States) - See all my reviews
... Bob George doesn't have exclusive access to the truths he illustrates in his book. A Christian doesn't have to read this book to realize the abundant life he or she has in Christ Jesus.

So why do I recommend this book so highly? Mainly because I believe that God has blessed Bob with an incredible ability to communicate spiritual messages to others. He certainly communicated those messages to me. Classic Christianity had a major impact on my life. Before reading this book, I was steeped in religion. I was brought up to believe that "God helps those who help themselves." Only later in life did I learn that the Bible never actually said that, Benjamin Franklin did. So everything I did as a Christian I did out of my own effort, trying to repay God a little for what He did for me by sending His Son to die on the cross. Oh sure, I sometimes asked God to help me when things were going a little rough, but I never considered asking anything of Him when situations were going well or my problems seemed manageable.

I certainly didn't ask for God's help when I read the Bible, and this is why I never came to the conclusions Bob did until after reading Classic Christianity. Bob consistently returns to the scriptures while making his points. He helped me to realize the importance, rather the necessity of relying upon the Holy Spirit for guidance through ALL parts of my life. Once I started to let the Holy Spirit take control of my life, I began to see the Bible from an entirely new vantage point. Everything started to make sense.

Bob's book does exactly what every Christian book should. It leads us back to our relationship with Jesus. Once there, we can receive truth right from the source of truth. Having reread most of the New Testament after reading Classic Christianity, I truly believe that the points made in Classic Christianity are valid. But don't take Bob George's word for it and certainly don't take mine. Read this book and then compare it to the Bible yourself. See if it doesn't have as big of an impact on your relationship with Jesus as it had on mine.

This is a truly great book of faith! Brother Bob cites awesome wisdom from Holy Scripture and explains thoroughly and lovingly that the Christian walk is not simply about salvation, which should be enough for most, but even more about having the Holy Spirit come to live within us. The Scripture references alone are worth more than the price of the book. Countless human stories of the glorious power of the Lord in our lives drive home the messages of God's word. I recommend this wonderful book to all believers and even to seekers after the faith.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book changed my thinking about Religion., July 25, 2001
By
Gail T. Mancuso (Evanston, IL United States) - See all my reviews
I was brought up Catholic. I never knew or appreciated the love of God until I read this book. In a way it changed my life. It certainly set me on a new path....a new spiritual journey to learn and desire to know Christ. The book made me realize the love that Jesus, that God has for us. That was never taught to me in my Catholic upbringing. It was always a teaching about good deeds, working to get the love of God which I now realize is a dead end street. He LOVES us,and He died for us and His Grace is there for us to receive if we could just get it together and accept His gift. And once we all realize the impact His love can have on our hearts we'll see how He'll shine and radiate through us and make a big difference in our lives and the lives we share with others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Before you do anything else, read this book!, December 4, 1999

This review is from: Classic Christianity (Paperback)
I first read this book 10 years ago and I can still say it changed my life and my relationship with Jesus. It's simple real life stories clear up so much of the cloudy confusion in Christian teaching. God is definitely using this book to bring people into an understanding of His amazing Unconditional love and acceptance. If that's something you want to understand, get this book. Besides that, it's true.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I've ever read, September 27, 2000
This review is from: Classic Christianity (Paperback)
I had been a committed Christian for about 20 years before I read this book. I have read most of the classics of Christian faith - The Bible (of course!), Foxes Book of Martyrs, Mere Christianity, Pilgrim's Progress, How Then Shall We Live?, and more. All of these books are great.

The most life changing one for me was the Bible (obviously!), followed by Classic Christianity. Eight years later I still read Classic Christianity occasionally for refreshment and also lend it to friends. It greatly improved my walk with Jesus. My friends who read it for the first time have a similar impression. I am going to order more copies to give away.

A friend placed this book in my hands and I couldn't put it down. Bob George has captured the beauty of the Christian walk in the freedom of God's grace. I especially appreciated his insight into God's loving acceptance of His children and how love and acceptance go hand in hand. This is a masterpiece and I highly recommend it.
