Editorial Reviews

Holiday collection from the Pop/Folk singer/songwriter. Contains yuletide favorites that celebrate the season and remind us of Denver's sadly missed talents.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected, but I don't mind December 14, 2012
Format:Audio CD
John's classic Christmas album was Rocky Mountain Christmas, but only about half of that album is featured on this compilation. I know that Rocky Mountain Christmas has previously been released on CD, but I didn't buy it. This compilation includes two tracks from Christmas Like a Lullaby (which I also own), two tracks from A Christmas Together, four tracks from Christmas in Concert and one from a very early album of John's, Whose Garden Was This.

It does at least retain my favorite songs from Rocky Mountain Christmas (Please Daddy don't get drunk this Christmas, Christmas for cowboys). Of the tracks not appearing here, some appear here in a different guise (via the version from Christmas in concert) while four very familiar classics have been dropped altogether, these being Rudolph the red nosed reindeer, Silver bells, Away in a manger and Silent night. Despite their omission, there are still a fair number of obvious classics here.

So I like this compilation despite the misleading title. If you particularly want the actual classic John Denver Christmas album, you must look for a copy of Rocky Mountain Christmas. Nevertheless, I imagine most people will be very happy with this collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nostaligic December 9, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Having been a teenager in the 1970's and gone to a John Denver concert, this album is really nostalgic for me. I have always loved John's mellow voice and have enjoyed his music for years while he was alive and cherished it after he died. This CD has 16 tracks with some traditional Christmas songs and some of his own composition. It is classically John Denver with one recitation piece about a forest tree named Alfie that asks everyone to remember the wind, the trees, the water, and all the animals that live there in their Christmas prayers and thoughts. John was the consummate advocate for all things of nature and this CD carries that same message. The CD reminds me of what John stood for and his love of Colorado with songs like Aspenglow. This album is a classic and if you loved his music and have not heard it for a while, this will surly bring back fond and peaceful memories. I am very glad that I made this purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars a golden nugget shining brightly for the season !!! November 22, 2012
Format:Audio CD
John Denver (born Henry John Deutschendorf, Jr., December 31, 1943--October 12, 1997) was a highly gifted singer/songwriter who advocated for environmental issues and freedom of expression in music; although his life was cut tragically short in a plane crash he lives on through his music. This album of his Christmas music gives us nothing but great tunes that are well crafted for getting people in the holiday mood; we get Christmastime standards mixed with other creative, less often heard songs on this album. In addition, the sound quality is very good.

"A Baby Just Like You" is a great start to the album; John Denver sings this song about his son Zachary very well and his guitar playing is flawless as always. "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)" gets a beautiful treatment from John who never lets go of a superfluous note; and Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" is very special indeed. The musical arrangement on "White Christmas" is easy on the ear, too! "Christmas for Cowboys" showcases John Denver's talent while "Please, Daddy (Don't Get Drunk This Christmas)" shows just how creative John could be when it came to performing a song not often heard during the holiday season.

5.0 out of 5 stars Denver's voice at Christmas March 28, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is an enjoyable collection of sixteen tracks, mostly from among the more contemporary songs of the season. Oh Holy Night reaches back to the more classic pieces. A very "listenable" album. Wish John were still with us!

5.0 out of 5 stars John Denver Christmas Album August 30, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
There is no one like John Denver. I have been listening to his music since I was a teenage and love and miss him dearly. This is a classic and one more to add to my John Denver Christmas collection. I have four other of his Christmas albums. If you want to get into the spirit or just love listening to his music, I highly recommend this album (CD). You won't be disappointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars John Denver at his best
The title of this album is deserved. Denver offers traditional Christmas fare with his own original pieces. The combination is perfect as a backdrop for any Christmas gathering.
