HHH -- a master, and a boxset of his prime.,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Hou Hsiao Hsien Classic Movie Collection 1983-1986 4-DVD Boxset with 56-Page Color Booklet, the Boys From Fengkuei (1983), a Summer At Grandpa's (1984), a Time to Live a Time to Die (1985), Dust in the Wind (1986) (DVD)
Each of these films are an examples of some of HHH's best work he has ever done. The films are all widescreen, but faux widescreen (widescreen presented in 4:3) The transfers are acceptable, but not amazing. The ONLY downside of the discs is the subtitles are not 100% translated and few typos and cut off words on one disc (a time to live...) The booklet is in Chinese for those curious. That's my quick rough review!

If you are interested in Taiwanese cinema, this box set contains some of the most acclaimed work from Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao Hsien. All four films have common themes, including modernization, conflict between the rural and urban Taiwan, coming of age, and self discovery. These films are rich with metaphor, a factor that rewards multiple viewings. It is very difficult to pick a favorite in this collection, because all four are fantastic films. If you're even looking at this you probably already know a good bit about these films. Do your self a favor and indulge yourself! |
