Gotta Love it - Where can I get more?!,

I have been listening to Valdy since the early 70's when my older sisters brought it home. Recently, I got out some old LP's and found one of his - we had a great time reminising as we sung all the old songs. Got me thinking about trying to find more of his stuff. The album I have is simply called Valdy, and it has all different songs from the Classic LP. I wish I could find it on CD - it was cut in the early 70's. So fun to see how well he has done and that he did some additional stuff. Would love to see him in concert!

I'd encountered this artist in the late 1970's after purchasing 'Valdy and the Hometown Band' in Europe. Unfortunately, I abandoned the album in Tehran shortly afterward and just recently was fortunate enough to find another album on CD through Amazon. The content is exceptional, with many of the tracks from my 'lost' recording. I only wish more offerings from this artist could be found on CD.

An absolutely magical performer singing some amazing songs,

It's a shame that more of this man's music is not available in CD form today so that more people could hear all the other tunes that went along with the music on this CD. Some will make you think, others will make you want to sing along while most will make you tap your feet and make you feel like dancing. The best our country has ever had to offer!

This is one of the best cd's out there. I became a fan of Valdy about 5 years ago -- my Mum got a hold of one of his tapes form the '70's (I wasn't around when he first started recording) and put it in the car and I've been hooked ever since. Saw him in concert in Yarmouth, NS 2 years -- a concert well worth going to if you get the chance. I wish I could find more of Valdy's albums on CD though. A GREAT COLLECTION!

I got this compilation based on the glowing reviews here and from the generally high acclaim my Canadian friends give this folk icon, and I really wanted to like Valdy, but I found these songs dated, mostly uninteresting and almost unlistenable. At best he sounds like early Little Feat or Seals and Crofts. While his voice is good, his lyrics are too often obvious and corney and the chord changes trite. A bit like mainstream pop country.
My preteen daughter said the songs sound like they could be from (the musical) GREASE, sung by RAFFI....emm, Raffi does Disco, not my preference... I guess I like my folk to have more of an edge. Valdy is nowhere near the league of such songsmiths as Richard Thompson, Warren Zevon, John Hiatt, or Bob Dylan. Some reviewer wrote Valdy is Canada's best songwriter. Haven't they heard of Joni Mitchell, Neil Young or Leonard Cohen? Sad to say, but Valdy is not even as good as many of the small circuit Canadian folk artists I've seen in the past year, such as; Ember Swift, Carolyn Mark, Geoff Berner, Ben Sures, Ken Hamm, Dave Lang, Dave Soroka, Rodney DeCroo, Cam Penner, Garnet Rogers, The Gruffs, The Bills, and Bob Egan... Maybe I just had to be there and then, but for old, authentic folk music I'll take the unpretentious Holy Modal Rounders or David Lindley any day. |
