From the Inside Flap

Kathryn M. Ireland is among the world's most influential interior and fabric designers. Her style is relaxed, casual European-influenced elegance. In Classic Country, Kathryn illustrates how her fabrics marry effortlessly with those of other designers. She shares her complete philosophy, color sense, and fabric schemes for easy living both indoors and outdoors. Sumptuously photographed and illustrated, this book showcases Ireland's boldly hued, brilliantly patterned designs, accompanied by detailed explanations of inspiration.

Ireland shows how to scheme a room using patterns, textures and colors together to create the feeling of a well-lived life.

Kathryn M. Ireland was raised in London and Scotland. Selected by House Beautiful as one of the top 100 designers in the United States, and touted by House and Gardens as one of ten designers to look out for in the millennium, Ireland's design sensibility has allowed her to create comfortable homes for Hollywood A-listers, English aristocracy, and neighbors next door. She launched her own fabric line in 1997, which is now distributed worldwide. She divides her time between Santa Monica, California, and Toulouse, France.

From the Back Cover

"katherine's sense of of proportions, color and realism for our lifestyles, make her rooms feel alive, inviting and livable! The best compliment of all is when a guest says it doesn't feel like a decorator's decorated. Only Katherine knows how a splash of red will do the right thing for the right place. Her fabrics are classically timeless with such a feeling of lightheartedness like her. "Our home is a collage of cozy vignettes that one has to seriously contemplate and where you wish to land for that moment of reflection and gratitude." -Kari Lyn Jones-Sabin

I am so disppointed in this book. (Story of my life, I guess.) While many of the interiors are pretty (p. 90-93 are the best), this book is really a high-end catalogue of Kathryn Ireland's fabric line (there are even photos of fabric swatches everywhere with her name prominently displayed. The fabrics themselves are unspectacular & not terribly imaginative, like Kathryn's interiors). WORSE, scattered throughout the book are worshipful quotes by her famous friends and celebrity clients. A sample from Steve Martin: "With Kathryn, you can shut your eyes, open them five months later, and everything will be perfect." And another: "Kathryn's fabrics are a total reflection of her personality -- vibrant, captivating, completely original and classy." OMG, did this person leave out the part about Kathryn's long coiling hair, perfumed with all the roses of Araby, hanging sensuously over a hand-dyed vintage batik throw pillow? Seriously, Keith Irvine (check out his self-aggrandizing tome) & Kathryn should have dinner someplace & admire themselves in the cutlery. The Best Thing about this Book: the 2 dogs and about 5 or 6 rooms. Seriously, there are better decorators out there.

The book is very pretty, but it's more like an ad for her fabrics. I wanted something to help me create a bedroom and it wasn't at all helpful.
Oh well. You can't judge a book by its cover. Or table of contents.

I bought Classic Country because of the pictures but I also looked forward to getting ideas and inspiration from what Kathryn Ireland had to say about her charming decorating style and her pretty fabrics - she is rightly proud of the informality and lack of pretence in what she designs, even a touch too proud for my taste.

The publishers have done well with the images but they have unleashed on the poor reader a text so sloppily written that it's not always clear what the author means. It is not being formal and pretentious to organise your ideas and edit your text before offering your book for sale. It's good manners.

Love all her books, especially Summers in France and the one about the Libby House in SoCal. This book is no exception - some advertising for her fabrics, but I think that's in response to requests for more info on the fabrics, from previous books. I really admire her creativity and lack of pretension. Waiting for her next release, and I'm sure Amazon will carry it.

Kathy Ireland is among the world's most influential interior and fabric designers, and in CLASSIC COUNTRY she shows how her fabrics blend with those of other designers. Any library strong in interior design needs this: it offers detailed explanations of how to use patterns, textures and color to maximum advantage, and it packs in color examples throughout. Very highly recommended, it goes beyond most interior design topics to consider the broader scope of form, function and choice.
