Book Description

November 1, 1999
The combination of Ms Machlin's recipes and 85 cartoons by Lou Myers will certainly initiate a trend in cookbooks in the future. This combination makes this book a future classic and one to be treasured. Both these creative people are gifts to this world and their book a natural gift to oneself and to one's friends.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Machlin is the author of the two-part Classic Cuisine of the Italian Jews and of Child of the Ghetto, a memoir about growing up in a small town in Italy before and during World War II. Her dessert book, which includes recipes from all over Italy, is part memoir as well, with reminiscences of family life in happier times along with references to the harsh realities of the war. Headnotes provide background for many of the more unusual sweets, and, like her earlier cookbooks, this one includes recipes that might otherwise have been lost. Strongly recommended.

From the Publisher

This book with its delicious recipes and "adorable illustrations" as Joan Nathan describes them in her foreword to the book should be considered by the reader not only as a gift to oneself but as an ideal gift for friends together with the other two books in the trilogy of cookbooks written by Edda Servi Machlin. These books warm the heart as well as provide recipes that delight the palate.

This review is from: The Classic Dolci of the Italian Jews, A World of Jewish Desserts (Hardcover)
This second volume of Servi-Machlin's Italian Jewish series is an undiscovered classic, and an early comer to the burgeoning "memoirs a cuisine" genre that has since swept us all up. (Think "Under the Tuscan Sun," "Chocolat," and "Like Water for Chocolate"). Machlin's anecdotes of Jewish Italian life prior to WWII are heartwarming, and given the subsequent history, poignant. Most of the people Machlin describes were literally swept away with little or no warning. This book, and its predecessor (The Classic Cuisine of the Italian Jews - available from Amazon!), have a special place in my collection, as much as for their historical value as for their wonderful meals and desserts, and the characters will always have a special place in my heart.
