I've been rocking dual 2217s in my 90g tang cichlid tank (40-50 fish) for the past 3 years...3 years of running every single day with not one single issue, ever. This is definitely a testament to Teutonic engineering. One of the 2217s contain the Coco Puff looking bio balls etc. the other contains ultra-cheap polyester pillow fill for mechanical filtration.

I clean my filters every 6 months and have had exactly no problems. Should I clean more often? Perhaps, but the results speak for themselves and that is 3 years of extremely happy, constantly breeding, Tanganyika Cichlids. Even after a power outage, the filters fire right back up. Silent operation to boot, with two of them running, I can't hear them. I use extra virgin olive oil to lube the o-rings which has worked well. Sometimes after a cleaning, getting them to prime isn't super easy but it's something I have to deal with only twice a year.

Since the volume of the canister is so large, once bacteria have established the filter media, they can handle just about any bio load you can throw at them. Tip number one - If you're establishing a new tank, check out Dr. Chris Cow's article on "fishless" cycling. I followed that method and aside from whether or not you see using starter fish as being inhumane the fact of the matter is that fishless cycling is much more of an exacting science as the addition of ammonia is easily and exactly measured. Be sure to use pure ammonia with no additives and once your ammonia and nitrite levels are at 0ppm, you're in business. It took my 90 gallon with no seed media around a month to fully establish and cycle (i.e. ammonia and nitrite=0ppm). With bacteria laden seed media, you could probably cut your cycle time in half. I found pure ammonia at Ace.

OK, there just simply isn't a better filter on the market. With the intake on the bottom and the exhaust on the top, there is simply no place for water to bypass the media and hence the filtration is far more efficient. Some people complain that the filter is quite difficult to clean. However, the manual shows an easy way to do this. I have kept mine without cleaning for 3 months or and my heavily planted fresh water aquarium has been doing great. The media is reusable and reusable and reusable. Get my point? :-)

They are extremely efficient. A bit more expensive that the rest of canister filters out in the market. But in the long run, these are better since they last longer and the rarely break down.

Worried about the filtration on your aquarium??? Get one of these silent/efficient/reliable guys.

I have been using my Eheim 2213 for 19 years now, and have never had to replace any parts, until now. It is an incredible filter, that keeps everything in the tank clear and fresh. The only complaint I have has already been fixed. The double shutoff connections that they've added will make cleaning it so much easier. 19 years ago, they didn't have these, but I may buy some extras. I've heard that the only downfall for Eheim is ordering replacement parts. The only thing needing replacement is the suction cups that hold the parts in place inside of the tank. Everything else is wonderful!

I would definitely recommend this to others. Especially with a good price for a canister filter.

You may think eheims are too expensive, but the classic models are worth every penny. Anyone who has owned one will agree, and there are countless threads on countless fishkeeping sites with countless people that agree. I've owned or used every brand of filter, and I wouldnt waste my time or money with any other canister filter. The newer eheims...I dont know... but the classic ones are fantastic and I would buy nothing else. They come with (the best) media, 2 doubletaps, and if you wait for the right sale or deal, can be gotten for the same price as comparable filters from other brands. Just pick one up and you can tell its made with so much higher quality materials, which over time really matters. The tubing is strong, the plastic is strong, its perfectly designed, etc.
There is no media bypass so all water gets treated. Very low power, efficient pump. Most filters get about 50% of their advertised flow rate or less. The 2217 gets 80% or more (i've personally tested many of them - this figure is without the spray bar, which i never use).

The double taps make it very easy to clean, and if you buy a couple media bags for $1, it makes rinsing the ehfisubstrat (little bio balls) much easier. I've set up 20+ aquariums in the past year for friends, friends of friends, coworkers, etc and I always tell them to not even bother with a tank over 20 gallons if they don't have an eheim canister filter.

You also don't have to open or clean them for 3 to 6 months (or even a year) at a time, and they will keep your aquarium crystal clear. They also make it possible to go much longer without water changes before there are negative consequences. I can go on and on about different ways they are better than everything else.
