Book Description

December 31, 2003
Discover the facts behind the romance of Old West gunfights. Historian Bob Boze Bell has put together a terrific book on the reality of gunfights in the wild American West. From infamous outlaws such as Billy the Kid, and well-known lawmen such as Bat Masterson and Wyatt Earp, to brawling madams, this book covers 24 gunfights that made a mark in western history. Profusely illustrated with historic photographs, maps, and period illustrations you'll have a front row seat for these shootouts.

Written in an engaging style, these histories give a brief bio of the shooters involved, usually a map or diagram of the location of the gunfight, and the aftermath of the shooting. Fascinating sidebars give added information on various topics. A must read for those interested in the true history of the Old West.

More About the Author

Bob Boze Bell, as he's called in his hometown (Kingman, Arizona), has published
seven colorful and groundbreaking books on the West, with virtually all
of them in multiple printings. Among the subjects-Wyatt Earp, Billy the
Kid, Doc Holliday and his latest, a compilation of Classic Gunfights,
Volume III, which came out in summer 2007.

In 1999, Bell, along with two other passionate Old West friends, bought
True West magazine and moved the editorial offices to Cave Creek, AZ.
The magazine, published since 1953, continues to grow and features the
distinctive style of Bell's creative vision.

In addition to his efforts for True West, Boze's work has appeared in
Arizona Highways, Playboy and National Lampoon. His artwork is featured
on numerous book covers, and he appears often on the History Channel,
Discovery Channel and the Westerns Channel (True West Moments), where
his historical expertise and art are often featured.

With several new books in the works and an aggressive expansion of the
magazine, Boze shows no sign of slowing down. "I'm having too much fun," he says, hard at work on a Sunday afternoon. "Work is only work if you'd rather be someplace else. And I'm right where I want to be."

4.0 out of 5 stars Bell weaves historical events and background into an entertaining tapestry, June 16, 2011

This review is from: Classic Gunfights (Paperback)
Bob Boze Bell is an entertaining character in his own right...if you've ever watched his interviews on TV or his vignettes portraying the gritty side of the Old West on the TV show "Cowboys," you know this book is going to keep your interest. The Classic Gunfights series is composed of three volumes, published in relatively small numbers in both paper back and hard back. The used book market prices of these books indicate that there is significant interest in the series (perhaps due to the fans in the Cowboy Action Shooting TM fraternity?). Bell's artistic interpretations and illustrations throughout the books are always stylized---sometimes dark and fatalistic...however, so is the topic. Some fans like Bell's style of presentation: lots of historical photos, illustrations, maps, and sidebar articles of short length placed on pages in mosaic style. The style allows one to pick up the book, look at pictures and their captions, read a little and put it back down for a while. One negative aspect is that Bell's ecclectic style often leaves a serious student of history a bit hungry for more substantive information...feeling like one has just read a series of tabloid articles. I personally like his extensive use of maps and historical photos of the period. Some argue that Bell misrepresents some historical events...I have yet to find a serious error in any of the Gunfights series...for another valuable set of heavily illustrated and footnoted books on the Wild West, check out the Authentic Wild West series by James Horan.
