Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

A Harley-Davidson motorcycle is unlike any other. American-made, heavy, and pulsating, it is set apart by its uniqueness. But the Harley is also a symbol for such things as brotherhood, masculinity, loyalty, and being an outsider. Williams tries to capture those attitudes and the spirit of the machine itself through images both of Harleys and of the Harley culture that embodies much of the symbolism. This photo assemblage offers colorful glimpses of customized Harleys, epic events like the annual Sturgis, South Dakota, rally, and lives that appear to be lived on the fringe. Aside from a brief company history of Harley-Davidson, the text is largely companion narrative for the photos and doesn't offer much substance. This is light fare, and though it's not a necessary purchase, it will probably be frequently off the shelf; the allure of Harley is strong. For public libraries.

Review

The Harley-Davidson motorcycle company is legendary. The Harley-Davidson marque represents an expression of human spirit enjoyed by no other brand of vehicle, whether two- or four-wheeled; it is a name synonymous with a distinctive attitude and a proud lifestyle. The Classic Harley recognizes the Harley-Davidson as an American icon, as a part of th country's cultural heartland and as a symbol of freedom for generations of bikers all over the world. Over 150 compelling images have been brought together under one cover. Their thoughtful composition and the diversity of their content (from the bikes and their riders to the landscapes of mind and country) illustrated graphically and emotively the power, persuasion and the glorious presence of Harley-Davidson. Mark Williams informative text is beautifully illustrated by the photography of Garry Stuart. -- Midwest Book Review

This review is from: The Classic Harley (Hardcover)
144 pages of pleasing and interesting pictures of bikes and people. Pictures include custom painted bikes, pictures of the backs of people showing their messages of allegiances. Bikes loaded for trips including scenes from Daytona and Sturgis. Includes pictures of pristine shiny bikes and bikes that are serving their owners through time (Rat bikes). There is also a section of tatoos. Finally, Harley racing. Most women are on the back of bikes, but there are about 4 pictures of women holding the throttle. My favorite pictures include two men enjoying a heart-throb road in the mountains, bikes hung from a tree, a group riding past Mount Rushmore and a couple Rat bikes with interesting "decorations."
