Editorial Reviews

In the 1850s, clockmaker Matthias Hohner began making harmonicas in Germany. By the turn of the century, his market expanded to America where among countless others, African Americans claimed the instrument as their own. Classic Harmonica Blues from Smithsonian Folkways brims with the creativity of soulful harmonica greats of the 20th century, including Sonny Terry, Doctor Ross, Phil Wiggins, and more. Culled from the historic Folkways Records collection and live performances at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, these recordings take us to the heart of the classic American blues tradition.

This is a fine collection of classic blues featuring the classic blues artists. Down to earth "gut bucket" blues that will stir whatever stirs in you. Highly recommended.

A wonderful sampler, all of it new to me. But a great jumping off spot to learn about this "niche angle" on the blues.

I bought this for my son who is a self taught blues harmonica player. He absolutely loves it. He said that because of their age so may of these old recordings have that scratchy, hissy sound but that many of them on this CD had been digitally cleaned up.

I absolutely loved this CD! All the tracks were great! The recording quality was great on all tracks except for one (one of the older songs). If you are looking for blues songs with strong harmonica presence, this CD has it!

This is a Smithosonian Compilation. I was hoping for a more varied historical representation. Nevertheless I like the songs chosen because it does show harmonica favorites performed by some lesser known blues masters. Most of these performances blur the distinction between Country & City Blues.
