IF you don't REALLY CARE about music; if you can't relate AT ALL if a friend mentions they "hear" music all the time whether or not there's an external source? Then this will do you no good ... sorry. Best spend the few irretrievable minutes you'll consume reading this elsewhere. It's OK, really. No condemnation. Go on ... have a good time elsewhere ... True, "Jazz is NOT for everyone," and it's true in the same way it's true that not all people dig poetry, literature, architecture, math or anything else that MAY require thought. But if you think you'd like jazz, or if you WANT exposure this is a GREAT place to start! Almost EVERY ONE of these cuts has become a favorite over the year I've been listening to this compilation. Of special note? Horace Silver, "SONG FOR MY FATHER;" Monk's "GOOD BYE PORK PIE HAT;" and Bill Evans' Trio, "WALTZ FOR DEBBIE."
So many of these tunes are organically linked to SO MUCH popular music of ALL kinds! As a musician of "a certain age," I'm transported to the late fifties and early sixties in L.A. Back when KFWB and the upstart KHJ ruled the airwaves. You were as likely to hear "Desifinado," or "Take Five," as you were "Splish Splash." Music hadn't been quantified, organized and computerized in those days ... "good music" was "good music" and we didn't KNOW we were listening to jazz! Now, it's a different world. Everything is specialized for maximum acceptance by the target demographic! But if you'd like to KNOW you can "expose yourself to art" painlessly as you cruise the inroads of jazz? This album is IT! In my humble opinion, of course. Enjoy! |
