Contrary to what amazon's review says, this is not a collection of some of Lorrie's 'biggest hits'. Rather, it's a compilation of 10 of Lorrie's early recordings from the late 70s and early 80s. These songs did not become big hits, but they should have. This collection contains a mix of slow heartbreak ballads and sassy upbeat numbers which would become Lorrie's trademark as she finally achieved success in the late 80s and throughout the 90s. My favorite ballads on this cd are 'The first few days of love' and 'In for rain' and as for the fast stuff, I really enjoy 'Who do you love in California' in particular. I won't go into detail about the songs. All I will say is that I have had the cassette version of this compilation for years now and I am going to order the cd version right after I finish writing this review! If you're a fan of Lorrie Morgan, I recommend this cd if you want to hear her early work! If you are unfamiliar with Lorrie, I still recommend this cd as it contains some beautiful songs, foreshadowing the exquisite music she would create later on in her career. For anyone wanting an introduction to her later work, I recommend either her 'Greatest hits' compilation or 'To get to you-Greatest hits collection'. Actually, get both of them as 'To get to you' contains songs that were not included in her 'Greatest hits' cd! The only song that appears on both collections is 'Something in red' and it's no wonder..it's one of the greatest songs of her career! So, for an overall picture of Lorrie's career in music, get 'Classics', 'Greatest hits' and 'To get to you-Greatest hits collection'! You won't be disappointed!

Lorrie made these recordings in the late seventies and early eighties but achieved only limited success. Given the quality of the music here, Lorrie deserved to be more widely heard, but she eventually made the big time after signing to RCA in the late eighties.

Three of the excellent songs here (The first few days of love, Say the part about I love you, Who do you know in California) were written or co-written by Eddy Raven, a singer who briefly made it in the eighties but who is now largely forgotten. Other great songs include Tell me I'm only dreaming, In for rain and a magical cover of the classic Someday we'll be together (Diana Ross and the Supremes).

The music here is similar in style to some of Lorrie's RCA music. This may not be essential except for committed fans of Lorrie's music but is definitely worth a listen.
