5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT SOUND QUALITY - BUT WHAT ABOUT HAPPY TRAILS?
THE SONGS ON THIS CD HAVE BEEN 24 BIT REMASTERED AND SOUND SUPERB. IN MY OPINION, IT EVEN SOUNDS BETTER THAN RHINO'S 1991 "SONS OF MERCURY" COMPILATION WHICH RHINO HAS ASSURED ME WAS MASTERED FROM THE ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES. BUT THE FLY IN THE OINTMENT IS THAT "WHO DO YOU LOVE" FROM "HAPPY TRAILS" (HT) IS STILL JUST AN EDIT, AND...

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing - sounds muffled and flat
I have to disagree strongly with the review below which says that the sound quality on this disc is "superb." It's not. In fact, it's one of the worst sounding discs I've purchased in a long time. On many of the cuts the higher frequencies are missing; this is probably because over long periods of time, recordings on tape (i.e. the master tapes used to produce this CD)...

BUT THE FLY IN THE OINTMENT IS THAT "WHO DO YOU LOVE" FROM "HAPPY TRAILS" (HT) IS STILL JUST AN EDIT, AND "MONA" IS NOWHERE TO BE FOUND. SINCE CLASSIC MASTERS CLOCKS IN AT JUST UNDER 51 MINUTES, CAPITOL COULD HAVE EASILY INCLUDED "MONA" AND "MAIDEN OF THE CANCER MOON." AND WHILE I'M ON THE SUBJECT, WHY WON'T CAPITOL 24 BIT REMASTER THE ENTIRE HT CD? CAPITOL'S CURRENT HT CD IS EXACT SAME VERSION FIRST PUT ON CD IN 1988 - THIN SOUND AND NO LINER NOTES. IF QMS AS A BAND IS WORTHY OF A "CLASSIC MASTERS" COMPILATION, THEN SURELY ITS BEST LP (AND ONE OF THE BEST EVER LIVE ROCK RECORDINGS) IS DESERVING OF THE SAME TREATMENT. THAT BEING SAID, THIS CD IS A MUST HAVE FOR ANY FAN OF QMS, IF FOR NOTHING ELSE THAN ITS PRISTINE SOUND QUALITY AND EXCELLENT LINER NOTES.

4.0 out of 5 stars great remix, July 9, 2006

I have the orginal quicksilver messenger service albums on vinyl, and I finally broke down and got the remastered cd . I really like the sound, they cleaned it up and made it sound like it originally sounded in the studio. If you are looking for a good mix of what the band was all about this is the album for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars PSYCHEDELIC AT IT'S BEST, September 2, 2005
This review is from: Classic Masters (Audio CD)
JUST PICKED THIS UP TODAY, WHAT AN AMAZING REMASTERING JOB DONE ON THIS CD. CAPITOL NEEDS TO DO THE WHOLE CATALOG OF QMS. BUT IF YOU JUST NEED A SINGLE DISC BEST OF, THIS IS THE ONE TO GET. IT HAS SUCH CLASSICS AS "SHADY GROVE" "WHO DO YOU LOVE" "FLUTE SONG" & "FRESH AIR". WHILE THERE IS ONLY 12 TRACKS, I AGREE WITH THE OTHER REVIEWER, THEY COULD HAVE PUT MORE SONG'S ON THIS DISC. CLASSIC SONG'S FROM A CLASSIC BAND. PICK THIS UP &....BE QUICK ABOUT IT.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent CD for QS fans, July 15, 2008

This CD is excellent if you are a Quicksilver fan. There are cuts that I have never heard before as well as better cuts from Albums that you might not want the whole CD of.. I think that the choice of material is excellent for a simple CD like this, although I might have included Fire Brothers or Don't Cry my lady love from the Quicksilver Album instead of Hope but I am sure there were reasons for this. I also have The double CD Best of Quicksilver Messenger Service Sons of Mercury that was put out some years back by Rhino, and the sound quality in this CD is about ten times better than that one. I think that some of the problem may be that the original analog tapes just do not have the quality of today's digital recordings, but as far as I was concerned the sound quality is excellent. I don't think that Capital could have done much better. A lot more attention went into this CD than went into the original recordings for these guys. The collection is not all inclusive as this could not be done on a single CD of this type, but what you get is worth much more than the price you are paying...

Great walk down memory lane. I had forgotten their unique sound, and I enjoyed listening to it once again. You can hear the band grow and change as they moved from rock and roll to their Quicksilver sound.

Few gen X or Y people know that Quicksilver Messenger Service was another vital piece of the musical pie that came out of the 60's/early 70's..........for those of you who don't know them.....pickup this 'best of' and connect the dots to modern jam bands........good stuff. bcp

I think this was remastered well. The sound is very good.

I agree with others that there were songs left out such as "Mona". I'd also like to see "Happy Trails" really re-mastered well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Music for our Generation, October 27, 2009

This is some of our best music of our generation. Quicksilver Messenger Service is a clasic rock group from San Francisco that in the 1960s made the best psychedelic rock music. This music never gets old.

5.0 out of 5 stars unadulterated rock-n- roll, July 15, 2007
This review is from: Classic Masters (Audio CD)
At this stage of my life, I do not have the time to listen to as much of the old Hard-Rock music that I would like. However, this QSM gem is always a trip down memory lane. When my wife is out of the house, I crank this up as loud as possible!!!! Oh, to be 20 years old again.

I have to disagree strongly with the review below which says that the sound quality on this disc is "superb." It's not. In fact, it's one of the worst sounding discs I've purchased in a long time. On many of the cuts the higher frequencies are missing; this is probably because over long periods of time, recordings on tape (i.e. the master tapes used to produce this CD) deteriorate. As a result, the music sounds dull and muffled. Also, I was surprised how dated many of these songs are, both in musical style and the lyrics. I was a big fan of QMS "back in the day," but this disc is a loser.
