4.0 out of 5 stars MANY GOOD SONGS THAT WERE NOT INCLUDED
THE SYLVERS AS A GROUP WAS VERY UNDERATED. THEY WERE TALENTED SINGERS WITH TIGHT HARMONIES. THERE WERE SO MANY GOOD SONGS FROM ALBUMS LIKE "SHOWCASE", "SOMETHING SPECIAL", "NEW HORIZONS", "FOREVER YOURS" AND "CONCEPT" (EVEN THOUGH THE LAST TWO WERE RELEASED ON OTHER LABELS) THAT COULD HAVE BEEN INCLUDED. 3.0 out of 5 stars Many Sylvers classics missing from this CD!
The third "Greatest Hits" package from the Sylvers in the past decade, "Classic Masters" leaves out many of the family's better soul tunes from the 70's and 80's. 1975's "Showcase" album is prominently represented with the #1 smash "Boogie Fever," along with "Free Style" (a new listen reaffirms this tune as an R&B classic) and "Cotton Candy," but what about "The Roulette...

SONGS LIKE "AIN'T NO DOUBT ABOUT IT", "I CAN BE FOR REAL", "GOT TO HAVE YOU", "SWEPT FOR YOU" AND "COME BACK LOVER COME BACK". THEY WERE SO MUCH MORE THAN A DISCO ACT. CAPITOL RECORDS SHOULD HAVE RELEASED MORE OF THE R&B FLAVORED SONGS THAT THEY RECORDED BACK IN THE DAY.

The third "Greatest Hits" package from the Sylvers in the past decade, "Classic Masters" leaves out many of the family's better soul tunes from the 70's and 80's. 1975's "Showcase" album is prominently represented with the #1 smash "Boogie Fever," along with "Free Style" (a new listen reaffirms this tune as an R&B classic) and "Cotton Candy," but what about "The Roulette Wheel of Love" or "I Can Be For Real?""Ain't No Doubt About It" (from "Something Special") in my opinion should have been released as a single by Capitol in 1976, and as such should have been included on this compilation. Putting the track on 45 would have went along way toward moving the group from the bubble gum category and could have delivered a solid R&B audience.Other tunes are missing as well. Notably absent: "Forever Yours," "Swept For You," "Just a Little Bit Longer," "Mahogany," "Come Back Lover, Come Back," and "Falling For Your Love."Patricia DeRuso hand a hand in writing the CD's liner notes. Perhaps Capitol Records should have included her in choosing the tunes included here. "Why," you ask? Because Ms. DeRuso is formely Patricia Sylvers .... of the Sylvers!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, March 18, 2004

Often overlooked, the Sylvers were a hot group in the '70s. They were overshadowed by the Jackson 5 (later the Jacksons), yet they made music just as good. They were given the ability to write and produce themselves. Check out Don't Stop Get Off, from the album "Forever Yours". It is included here in an extended form that has never appeared on a Sylvers album before. This also has all the hits from the era..Boogie Fever, Hotline, High School Dance. As well as pre-Boogie Fever songs. Hotline still gets me excited to this day. I love the intro with the piano. Boogie Fever is disco at it's best. They could have added a song or two from the Disco Fever album, but that's ok..I still have that on vinyl.

I really wish that I could talk to ya and tell you how much I love this CD. The only thing that would make this better is if Misdemeanor was put on there. I do know that, that was not a Sylvers song but Fosters. The CD is still very good.

This review is from: Classic Masters (Audio CD)
THe Sylvers were more than the Bubble Gum Material that Eventually made there later work.Leon Sylver is Tight Producer&He went on to Produce alot of Good Records.this Group never got that Push.there songs for the time were fun "Hot Line" etc... but there was more to this Act than that.still cool to reflect.

It was the era of The Jackson Five when The Sylvers exploded on the scene with classics like "Wish I could Talk to you" and "Fool's Paradise". But where is Foster's "Misdemeanor"?
That true classic should have been substituted for the overly hyped Boogie Fever, which signaled the end of the soul / funk era.
Long live The Sylvers!

5.0 out of 5 stars You had to actually be in the 70s to know about this!, October 27, 2006

The Soul music of the 70s is in vogue right now (just as 50s doo wop was in vogue during the actual 70s, go figure), but the kids who are hearing the 70s stuff secondhand won't know about this. The Sylvers, for some reason, doesn't get much retro play and is loved mostly by those of us who were there at the time.

Like the other handful of Sylvers Cds making the rounds at the moment, this one centers mostly on songs from the 1976 classic "Something Special," (High School dance, Boogie Fever, Hot Line, etc., but most of that album's ballads are missing here) which welcomed my entry into 6th grade and middle school dances. However, this one also includes some well-remembered but seldom heard songs today such as "Fool's Paradise" and the 1978 stomper "Don't Stop, Get Off." The latter was a popular chant at basketball games at the time and I still find myself humming it whenever I'm excitied by something today.

As was the case with the better-known Jackson 5, this was innocent, fun music that you could play around your parents as well as your younger siblings. It's a shame that "Classic Soul" stations don't play this. Buy this, and you can whenever you want to.
