4.0 out of 5 stars An amazing return to form, Patti sang her a** off on this one fo sho
I love Patti. I have virtually everything she's every put out on LP and CD, but her last few CDs left me a bit cold. It's not PATTI's style or her remarkable VOICE, it was the sub-par, lackluster material that didn't suit or do her voice justice. But now Patti returns with her second album on Def Jam, and I have say: WOW! I wasn't expecting such a solid, stunning effort...

First of all I want to say that I believe that Patti Labelle is one of the greatest singers ever to grace the stage. If you ever get a chance to see her perform live then you'll become a believer as well. It's like some type of spiritual experience. I wasn't expecting such a solid, stunning effort - even though these may be simply "covers," Patti takes hold of each one and sings the sh*t out of them, making them totally her own, sometimes surpassing the originals! Her octave-ranging, searing, emotional takes on SONG FOR YOU and The Pretenders' STAND BY YOU (who would thunk?) are terrific, especially toward the end, when Patti lets loose with her signature ab-libs that reach the sky! But I'm even more surprised she finally picked up the pace with winning remakes of THE JONES GIRLS' disco classic YOU'RE GONNA MAKE ME LOVE SOMEONE ELSE and, amazingly, KRISTINE W's over-looked gem from her own debut album, the title track LAND OF THE LIVING - I really liked the "live" organic funky arrangement on this one, much more groovy than the typical sterile house remix - although both these tracks are begging for the house remix treatment; #1 Billboard dance hits are a no-brainer. Fast or slow, Patti NAILS this one outta the park. I am so happy for her - and glad that YOU can purchase this CD, support her, and ENJOY every cut!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff, July 21, 2005
This review is from: Classic Moments (Audio CD)
This is really good stuff. I have read the reviews here and the standards set for this lady are so high. One song that isn't perfect and the critics start screaming. What artist puts out an album with every single song perfect? Please, no one! Patti's diversity, range, power and personality are unmatched, so as previous reviews have indicated, the haters are out. I think that several of the unpleasant reviews with personal attacks are by the same individual using multiple sign ons.
Didn't I Blow Your Mind is my favorite, as Ms. LaBelle hits those power notes using that 5 octave gift of a voice. I have a tendency to like her slower selections which include Silly and I'll Write A Song for You. I Can't Make You Love Me is just plain too slow. Your Song with Elton has a real nice personal touch and connection between them. They have been great friends for a long time and it shows.
Patti has it going on and I purchased several of these CD's to give as gifts. Everyone loved them. Believe me that you will love it, too.
Finally, there is no way that the few bashers reviewing this CD have purchased or even listened to the CD. They are just trying to lower her overall reviewer rating.

5.0 out of 5 stars Billboard Reviews, June 27, 2005
This review is from: Classic Moments (Audio CD)
I thought that those who did not see the Billboard reviews for Patti LaBelle's new album and single would like to read these excellent reviews from Billboard. They were released today. Great reviews from a tough reviewer and a leader in the music industry.

ARTIST: PATTI LABELLE

ALBUM: CLASSIC MOMENTS

These days, it's a given for veteran artists to pay homage to music from the past. Sometimes it works tremendously well (Cyndi Lauper's "At Last"), other times it fails miserably (too many to mention). Patti LaBelle's "Classic Moments" is appropriately titled. In fact, it is those two words that her fans will be uttering after spending time with this stirring disc, which opens with the Aretha Franklin nugget "Ain't No Way" (featuring Mary J. Blige). In their care, heartbreak has never sounded so good. LaBelle also partners with Elton John and Kristine W on songs they made famous: "Your Song" and "Land of the Living," respectively. Other highlights: "You're Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else" (the Jones Girls), "I'll Stand by You" (the Pretenders) and "Love Ballad" (L.T.D.). Throughout, LaBelle's gift -- that voice -- is front and center.

ARTIST: PATTI LABELLE FEATURING MARY J. BLIGE

SINGLE: AIN'T NO WAY

The timeless and the timely join hands on the first single from Patti LaBelle's new "Classic Moments" CD. This is the stuff from which classics are made, with a multigenerational diva-fest between LaBelle and the equally thunderous Mary J. Blige, complete with all the riffing and hand-waving you might expect from two of the most powerful voices in soul music. There's nothing to do but sit back and feel humble as the pair tears into a song made famous (and co-written) by Aretha Franklin.

If you ever get a chance to see her perform live then you'll become a believer as well. It's like some type of spiritual experience. Now with that all aside I have to say this cd is'nt really all that classic. The only moment I enjoy on this cd is the duet with Mary J. Blige. Patti deserves better production than this project delivered. Maybe another LIVE cd recording would redeem Patti from this dismal project.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Goddess of Sound, April 12, 2006
By
This review is from: Classic Moments (Audio CD)
Who else but Labelle would dare cover classics "Love Ballad" from Anita Baker and "I Can't Make You Love Me" from Bonnie Raitt on a single album? Patti testifies to her goddess diva status by the sheer audacity of this album's song list. She's amazing here, as always. My favorites are "Silly", "Stand By You", "YGMMLSE", and "I Can't Make You Love Me." Even Labelle knows if she's going to cover Bonnie Raitt's signature song, she better bring her A game. It took a couple of listens for Patti's version to hit me because it is so different from Raitt's understated masterpiece, but Patti delivers a brilliant, deeply personal, heartbreaking new interpretation of this very great song. This album is about just that - the supreme goddess of sound putting her personal stamp on some of the best songs ever written.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of her best....., August 9, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

Patti may have had some missteps lateley with the Timeless Journey album being just so-so, but this album brings back the Patti that we know and love. Not all of the songs are winners but certainly enough of them are. It really shows off her range too with some quiet ballads as well as some well done (and over the top) classic soul renditions.

As usual, Patti LaBelle has given a superb performance on this project. Her duets with Kristen W., Elton John and Mary J. Blige are breath taking. She is a compassionate singer who connects with her audience in a manner like no other performer.

This is a must buy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Moments from a Classy Sista, July 3, 2005
This review is from: Classic Moments (Audio CD)
What can I say about Miss Patti other than she STILL has IT!!!! I am an avid music lover and I absolutley love this CD!!! It is classic Patti with strong vocals, the background singers are jamming, and the instruments sound damn good. I love Jean Carn's version of "Ain't No Way" but Patti and Mary J. do an excellent job, too. These are the songs I grew up on and I love this type of music and saaaanging! Since Luther has died, I'd love for her to do a CD tribute to him, of his songs but sung in duet style with her favorite artists. Now, wouldn't that be PHENOMENAL!!!!

Rest in peace Luther!

We will miss you, but as Frankie Beverly said Friday night in Raleigh, NC "Thank You" for the music and he proceeded to tear up his song with Maze called "Thank You."

As always, Patti never lets us down. She always sings every song from her heart and soul. Her voice and style continues to make her worthy of a standing ovation with every thing she does.
As Patti has proven over and over again for many years and up against the best, she can out sing them all. Her spirit shines on!

5.0 out of 5 stars Miss Patti Belts it out of the Ballpark, June 25, 2005

This review is from: Classic Moments (Audio CD)
On this cover of well-known favorites, Miss Patti demonstrates the unique style and range that have made her a music mainstay for nearly half a century. Stand-outs include a duet with Elton John on "Your Song" and a rousing rendition of The Pretenders' "I'll Stand by You." In a time when music performers are empty shells produced by the music marketing machine, it's refreshing to hear the pipes of a true talent.
