I Bought the original book a few years ago..Leather bound, signed by Mick Rock/Brian and roger and now the people who could not afford that get this..the compact version, still full of rare pictures of Queen in the early years, great insiders view of the Band before Bo Rhap, a Great read and well worth the price..BUY!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Underwhelmed
Looks like I'm going to be the first to go on record as saying this book is just not all that.

The book, the anecdotes and pictures do give a little insight into Queen during the Queen II and Sheer Heart Attack era but, in the end it just seems to lack so much.

The pictures are a mix of studio shots for the cover of both albums and for promo...

This was a beautiful book, with pictures that took my breath away, many times. Well worth the hardback price. The tidbits of information were icing on this cake. A coffee table book I will enjoy over and over again.

Mick Rock captures Queen in their beautiful innocence. Such boldness and sweetness rolled into one starting out with all the promise of what was yet to be. Wonderful images of a dynamic group in their prime, a must for all Queen fans.

3.0 out of 5 stars Underwhelmed, February 5, 2011
This review is from: Classic Queen (Hardcover)
Looks like I'm going to be the first to go on record as saying this book is just not all that.

The book, the anecdotes and pictures do give a little insight into Queen during the Queen II and Sheer Heart Attack era but, in the end it just seems to lack so much.

The pictures are a mix of studio shots for the cover of both albums and for promo material and candid shots that give a glimpse of the band onstage and behind the scenes. However, as a collection they really have no emotional or artistic impact. They are, or at least appear to be, all the crappy shots of the band that were not good enough to be included in an album or sent to some rock magazine. They're the cast-offs. Too bad.

Rock's anecdotes do little or nothing to add to the package either. Though even he admits that Queen was a very democratic band, his writings are more a love letter to Freddie Mercury than than an homage to the entire band, the era or the times. And when he wasn't fawning all over Freddie he was going on about himself...yuk. Just take a look at the page that was dedicated to Roger Taylor...one pic and two thoughts. WTF? Did he hate Roger, or what?

The true litmus test of the value of this book is how much time a true Queen fan spends on each page. I love Queen. Been a fan since Sheer Heart Attack. I finished the book in about 1/2 hour. Normally I would have spent hours pouring over the details of each pic or reading about players and hangers-on. Not so with this book. Too bad. An opportunity lost.

I picked this book up in the discount section of B&N. I figured it was probably there because Queen has been out of the limelight for so long and consequently sales had tapered off. After having read it, I'm thinking the book was there because it wasn't selling. And it wasn't selling because it's just not good. I could be wrong.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gorgeous book with wonderful photos and nice memories., January 29, 2010

I love this book. Beautiful photos and great memories from Mick Rock. If you like Queen then this book is a great choice! Some really rare and gorgeous photos and interesting information about the band. Dedicated to Freddie Mercury and with a percentage of the Royalties from the sale of the book going to the Mercury Phoenix Trust for Aids Research. So nice to see so many quotes in the book by Freddie Mercury he obviously enjoyed talking and working with Mick Rock.

Beautiful, unforgettable pictures and first-hand stories about the boys, what else would any fan want? And this quality of printing for such a low price? I could barely believe it.
