Book Description

Highbridge Distribution January 1998
Take a journey through the glorious days of radio with performances by the great masters of the British theatre. Featuring the works of some of the greatest writers of the last century--Herman Melville, Oscar Wilde, H.G. Wells, Bret Harte, Nikolay Gogol--and originally broadcast in half-hour episodes during the 1950s as the Theater Royale, these classic performances capture the theatrical style of post-war radio at its best, before the advent of television. 2 cassettes. .

Editorial Reviews

About the Author

OSCAR WILDE was born in Dublin in 1854.He went to Trinity College, Dublin and then to Magdalen College, Oxford, where he began to propagandize the new Aesthetic (or 'Art for Art's Sake') Movement. Despite the success of his works, Wilde's private life lead to an eventual downfall in his popularity and circumstance.

From AudioFile

Not enough good things can be said about this compilation of the Theatre Royale radio dramas performed by master thespian Sir Laurence Olivier and an ensemble cast in the 1950's. The choice of pieces is a great one, offering a wide range of material--mystery to comedy--by some of the best authors in history. Of course, Olivier shines in his roles but never upstages the other actors (if such a thing is possible on audio!). Olivier is bold as "The Canterville Ghost," befuddled as the well-intentioned employer in "Bartleby," wily and clever in "The Inspector General." Nostalgia radio buffs will thrill at this audio, but so will anyone who appreciates fine performing. R.A.P. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine
