James Scott: Forgotten Rag-Timer.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Classic Ragtime From Rare Piano Rolls (Audio CD)
This disc is exactly what it purports to be: a nice collection of James Scott's fine rags, performed by himself, and recorded using early-20th century piano roll techne. The sound is quite good; the timing as well. Scott's rags are keen. Anyone interested in ragtime and early jazz should know James Scott's work, as well as that of Joseph Lamb and Jelly Roll Morton--besides of course Scott Joplin's.

Piano Rolls,

This review is from: Classic Ragtime From Rare Piano Rolls (Audio CD)
Looking back, the Big Three of early piano ragtime were Scott Joplin, James Scott, and Joseph Lamb. Complete collections of Lamb's and Joplin's published works are available on disc in performances by present-day pianists. For some reason, the same isn't true of Scott; to the best of my knowledge, this transcription of the old piano rolls is the fullest collection Scott's music available. It's okay. The piano rolls were well produced and these transcriptions are almost as good as live performances. Scott's rags are less flowery than many of Joplin's, but they are every bit as good. This is a great album.
